Humanity and Wealth: The Perpetual Economy Driven by Five Desires

Since the dawn of human civilization, the essence of all economic activity has remained unchanged—it is rooted in the most primal and enduring desires of human nature. No matter how eras shift or technologies evolve, commerce has always revolved around five core needs: greed, wealth, interest, desire, and health. These five pillars form the hidden framework of societal operation and the eternal riverbed through which wealth flows.

Greed is the oldest driving force, morphing into an obsession with risk and extravagant profits. From ancient Roman gambling dens to today’s cryptocurrency, humans eternally crave the miracle of gaining much with little, even when the odds are slim. This pursuit of “possibility” is both the spark of innovation and the fuse of destruction, revealing the paradox of rationality and madness within human nature.

The flow of wealth constructs the credit system of civilization. From barter to digital currency, lending and consumption have always been the lifeblood of the economy. It satisfies not the present but the illusion of overdrawing the future—humans are ever willing to trade tomorrow’s freedom for today’s pleasure. This transaction of time reveals our anxiety about the “present” and futile resistance to “eternity.”

Interest is the sublimation of desire, transforming survival into living. From the refined arts of scholars to modern people spending extravagantly on in-game skins, paying for passion is inherently an investment in the “self.” In symbolic consumption, people no longer buy function but identity and meaning, making commerce a co-conspirator in constructing individual narratives.

The trade of desire is the most hidden empire. From ancient Egyptian perfumes to social media algorithms, it sells not the body but the antidote to loneliness—the illusion of being seen, desired, and momentarily fulfilled. In the digital age, the economy of desire has evolved into an attention economy, where every like and tip is the signing of a micro emotional contract.

Health is the endpoint of desire and the ultimate commodity. From alchemy to gene editing, humans use all resources to resist the tyranny of time. The longevity economy is perpetual because it trades in fear—the collective dread of illness, aging, and oblivion. Here, science, superstition, and commerce form a paradoxical alliance, selling a non-existent eternity.

What makes these five desires unique is their mutual transformation: greed can masquerade as investment wisdom, desire sublimates into artistic appreciation, and obsession with health spawns wellness superstitions. The essence of commerce is to provide legalized, ritualized, and even sanctified outlets for desires, weaving primal impulses into the narrative of civilization.

Yet, when desires are infinitely amplified, they also consume humanity. Gambling destroys families, consumerism creates emptiness, and the commodification of emotion alienates intimate relationships—the abundance of the economy often comes at the cost of a spiritual desert. True wisdom lies not in satisfying desires but in understanding how they shape us and where they imprison us.

Perhaps, the cycle of these five desires ultimately points to a philosophical proposition: all human efforts are but building sandcastles of “eternity” within “transience.” Commerce is the most intricate pattern in these sandcastles, recording our yearnings while reflecting our limitations. And wealth is merely the measure of desire, mapping the eternal journey from scarcity to abundance, and from abundance to nothingness.
