Vow-Power Subsumes Karma-Power: One Lamp Dispels a Thousand Years of Darkness

I. The Dark Room and the Lamp: The Framework of Practice

Our mind is like a sealed room that has been dark for a thousand years.

The greed, hatred, and delusion from past lives, together with the grievances, anxieties, and attachments of this life—all piled up layer upon layer—constitute that “thousand-year darkness.” It seems impregnable, for it spans the entire length of your memory, even deceiving you into believing, “This is just who I am.”

Yet darkness has a fatal weakness: it has no substance; it is merely the absence of light.

In this dark room, a lamp has always been present—your awareness, which is none other than Buddha-nature.

Spiritual practice is not about punching the darkness away blow by blow, but about reaching out to light that lamp.

愿力,是你决定点灯的那一念坚决;

Vow-power is the resolute thought with which you decide to light the lamp.

Karma-power is the deeply entrenched inertia of habitual tendencies that has long dominated the dark room.

When vow-power arises and the lamp is lit, karma-power begins to dissolve.

II. Karma-Power: Why Are Old Habits So Hard to Change?

Many people practice for years and, finding that their temper remains short and their greed still strong, become discouraged: “My karmic obstacles are too heavy; I’ll never succeed.”

This reflects a misunderstanding of how karma operates.

Karma-power is like a waterfall or inertia.

Having lost your temper countless times in the past, your brain has established neural pathways for “anger upon contact with triggers.” Having avoided difficulties countless times, your mind has formed a psychological pattern of “retreating in the face of hardship.”

This is karma-power. It resembles a heavy truck speeding down a steep slope; a mere thought of “I don’t want to be like this anymore” (weak willpower) is insufficient to stop it.

Thus, when the Buddha said “fixed karma cannot be changed,” he meant: at the same level of cognition and frequency of mind, past karma will inevitably manifest.

Unless, that is, you activate a higher-dimensional energy—vow-power.

III. Vow-Power: The Pivot That Switches Tracks

Vow-power is neither desire nor fantasy.

Vow-power is the active calibration of the direction of life.

Desire is “what I want” (grasping), whereas vow-power is “what I resolve to become” (giving).

When you generate a pure vow—for instance: “May this practice of mine uproot the suffering of all beings, including my own afflictions”—

this single thought is like pressing the button for a rocket booster in the cab of that heavy truck.

Why can vow-power subsume karma-power?

Because vow-power is active, present-moment, and future-oriented, while karma-power is passive, past, and inertial.

In physics, no matter how great the inertia, it cannot withstand a sustained thrust in the opposite direction.

In spiritual practice, no matter how heavy the habitual tendencies, they cannot outweigh a sincere and vast vow.

Key Point for Practice:

Each morning, before considering what you must do today, make a vow:

“May all my words and actions today benefit myself and others. May I maintain right mindfulness in favorable conditions and remain free from affliction in adverse conditions.”

This single thought adds a drop of oil to the lamp in your heart.

IV. One Lamp Dispels a Thousand Years of Darkness: The Immediate Presence of Awareness

All theory pales before a single moment of awareness.

When you are angry and suddenly realize, “I am angry”—

this thought of “knowing” is that lamp.

The darkness (anger) is not suppressed by you; it is merely illuminated.

Once illuminated, you realize that anger is not “me”; it is merely a mass of energy arising in the mind. When the lamp is lit, the very nature of this energy changes; it can no longer blind your eyes.

This is “one lamp dispels a thousand years of darkness.”

That thousand-year-old darkness (past karma) need not take a thousand years to dissipate; it dissipates in the very instant the lamp is lit.

Even if you have created karma throughout your entire life, if at the final moment you turn the light of awareness inward and vow to be reborn in the Pure Land or to realize Bodhi, then the raging torrent of karma accumulated over a thousand years is halted by the dam of that single moment of vow-power.

Key Point for Practice:

Do not wait for “no-thought”; practice precisely where thoughts arise.

When a thought arises—be it greed or hatred—simply ask: “Who is thinking?”

Or simply note: “Ah, anger has arisen.” “Ah, craving has arisen.”

Do not judge; simply observe it. This is lighting the lamp.

V. Subsuming: Transforming Karma-Power into Fuel for Vow-Power

The profound secret of practice lies in this: not only do we not reject karma-power, we actually harness it.

That heavy truck of karma—if you try to abandon it and run, it will chase you forever.

But if you climb into the driver’s seat, harness its inertia (karma-power), and shift into the gear of vow-power (Bodhicitta), this very truck becomes your Dharma throne.

强烈的欲望,若转为普贤行愿,便是度生的动力;

Afflictions are precisely Bodhi—this saying is no exaggeration.

Intense desire, when transformed into the Vows of Samantabhadra, becomes the driving force for liberating beings.

Profound suffering, when transformed into great, impartial compassion, becomes the very opportunity for awakening.

Key Point for Practice:

When you feel habitual tendencies surging and suffering becomes unbearable, do not merely think of “purifying karma.”

Try making this vow: “May my endurance of this suffering substitute for the suffering of all beings undergoing similar pain, granting them liberation. May my experience of this affliction grant me deep insight into the afflictions of all beings, enabling me to alleviate their suffering in the future.”

With this shift in perspective, karma-power becomes sustenance for vow-power. The thousand-year-old dark room becomes instantly luminous.

Conclusion: Lighting the Lamp Marks the Beginning of Practice

Do not wait for the dark room to brighten before believing there is a lamp.

Do not wait for karmic obstacles to be completely purified before making vows.

At this very moment, as you read these words, the awareness that “I am reading, I am thinking” is the lamp.

At this very moment, the thought arising in your mind—“I vow to change, I vow to benefit others”—is vow-power.

Now that the lamp is lit, where is the thousand-year darkness?

Now that vow-power has arisen, where can karma-power go?

May this writing serve as a lamp, dispelling the darkness in the hearts of all.
