Breaking the Hell: At the Shatter of Tiles, Seeing the Boundary of Life and Death and the Cage of the Mind
“The dead have their hell; who will break the hell of the living?”
In the serene yet vibrant settings of the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival in Hong Kong’s New Territories, or within the solemn confines of a traditional Lingnan funeral, one witnesses a striking ritual: at the center of the hall sits a brazier filled with burning charcoal, encircled by nine ceramic tiles—symbolizing the "Nine Hells" of the underworld. A Taoist Nam Mo master, robed in elaborate vestments, treads the celestial "Pacing the Dipper" (Bugang) steps, wielding a peachwood sword. With a resonant chant, the sword strikes down; the tiles shatter, sparks fly, and the master strides across the flames. This is the renowned Taoist salvation ritual—Breaking the Hell (Po Di Yu).
This is far more than a religious performance; it is the exquisite intersection of Taoist cosmology, views on life and death, and depth psychology. When we re-examine this ritual through the lens of the 2024 film The Last Dance, we discover that Taoism had, millennia ago, already penned a comprehensive "guide to spiritual healing" for modern individuals grappling with trauma and obsession.
I. The Symbolic Universe: The Nine Hells and the Tiles
In the Taoist scripture Lingbao Lingjiao Jidu Jinshu, the purpose of Breaking the Hell is to rescue the souls of the dead from "Fengdu" (the underworld). In practice, however, these nine ceramic tiles are the ritual’s core "props."
(The Tiles as "Form"):
Taoism teaches that the "Great Tao has no form," yet to save others, one must "borrow the false to cultivate the true." Tiles are fired clay, inherently inanimate, yet within the ritual, they embody the image of the "Gates of Hell." This echoes the Diamond Sutra: "All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows." Hell is not a physical location, but a projection of the soul’s attachments. Those nine tiles enclose fear, unresolved karma, and lingering attachments.
(The Flame as "Refinement"):
Fire, associated with "Li" (the Clinging) in the Five Elements, represents light and dispersion. When the master strides across the fire, he is not merely crossing a physical barrier, but symbolizing the soul’s baptism by fire—burning away karmic obstacles to attain enlightenment. From a psychological perspective, this fire is catharsis. It allows the living to witness a definitive "ending," providing an outlet for suppressed emotions.
II. The Language of the Body: Pacing the Dipper and the Fasting of the Heart
In the Breaking the Hell ritual, the master’s footwork—Pacing the Dipper (Bugang)—is most captivating. It is a mystical gait simulating the pattern of the Big Dipper.
(Dynamic Meditation):
Unlike static meditation, Taoist rituals emphasize the interplay of movement and stillness. The master, holding sword gestures with rigorous footwork, requires extreme concentration. This is dynamic meditation. At that moment, the master is not merely a performer but a medium. Through the extreme order of his body, he confronts the extreme chaos of the netherworld. This alignment of body, speech, and mind parallels modern psychology’s concept of mindfulness—achieving mental tranquility through present-moment awareness.
(Fasting of the Heart):
Zhuangzi said, "Only the Tao gathers in emptiness. Emptiness is the fasting of the heart." Breaking the Hell is not merely about breaking the external hell; it is about the master, through fasting and concentration, reaching a state of "emptiness" where "the empty chamber is filled with light." Only when the master’s heart is vacant can the divine power of the Heavenly Worthy of Salvation manifest through him. This reveals a profound Taoist wisdom: The key to changing the external world lies in purifying the internal landscape.

III. The Cinematic Metaphor: The Hell of the Living
The film The Last Dance elevates this ritual to a philosophical climax. Its resounding dialogue reveals the profound compassion embedded in Taoist culture:
("The living have their own hell.")
What constitutes the hell of the living? It is Master Man’s (Michael Hui) anxiety over the loss of tradition, Tao-sang’s (Dayo Wong) fear of an uncertain future, and Yuet’s (Michelle Wai) resentment under patriarchal constraints. These attachments are the "Nine Hells" of the living.
(Breaking Tiles vs. Breaking Bonds):
In the film’s climax, Yuet wields the sword to shatter the tiles. At this moment, she breaks not only the tiles symbolizing her father’s hell but also the estrangement between father and daughter and the outdated rule of "passing skills only to males." Taoism advocates "Equality of Things" (Qi Wu), asserting that all things are inherently equal. As Yuet strides across the flames, she redeems her own identity. This teaches us: The true end of a ritual is not the altar, but the human heart.
(The Mundane Meaning of the Heavenly Worthy of Salvation):
The Heavenly Worthy of Salvation (Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun) is the Taoist embodiment of rescuing the suffering. Yet in a modern context, who is this savior? The film suggests: It is the family member willing to understand you, the self willing to change, and the courage to defy conventions.
IV. Conclusion: Rebirth in Shatter
Po Di Yu breaks "attachments."
When the sound of shattering tiles echoes, we should hear not merely the conclusion of a ritual, but an awakening. The brilliance of Taoist culture lies in its unflinching confrontation with death to teach us how to live. Those nine tiles are, ultimately, the walls we erect around our own hearts. And that sword? It is not in the master’s hand, but within our own minds.
The next time you face life’s impasses, ask yourself:
Where is my hell?
Which sword shall I wield to shatter the illusions before me?
