Neither Attached to Self, Nor Trapped by Others: The Two Distinct Levels of "Not Caring"

People often conflate "not taking oneself seriously" with "not taking others seriously," mistaking both for a casual, devil-may-care attitude. This is a grave misunderstanding. These two seemingly similar forms of "not caring" actually stem from entirely distinct levels of spiritual cultivation. One turns inward to dismantle "ego-attachment," while the other turns outward to establish "boundaries." They differ not only in direction but also in their sequence of practice, which must not be reversed.

I. Not Taking Oneself Seriously: The Internal Work of Dismantling Ego

"Not taking oneself seriously" is the practice of dissolving ego-attachment (Atmagraha).

True cultivation is not self-deprecation or nihilistic laziness; it is about stepping down from the center of the stage where the inflated "self" resides. Most people spend their lives subconsciously playing the "protagonist," believing their emotions are the world's axis and others' gazes are the ultimate judgment of their worth. This excessive attachment to the "self" is the root of all anxiety, shame, and vanity.

True "not taking oneself seriously" is a清醒 (qīngxǐng—clear-headed) self-dissolution:

  • When making a fool of oneself, one can laugh at oneself without self-harm, understanding it is a mistake in "action," not a bankruptcy of "character."

  • When facing criticism, one can listen without defensiveness, recognizing that the critique targets a specific action, not a wholesale rejection of one's value.

  • When succeeding, one can rejoice without indulgence, realizing that glory is a product of converging circumstances, not something a mere individual can monopolize.

This requires profound introspection. We must constantly observe the inner craving for validation, acknowledge it, but not obey it. At its deepest, this practice leads to the state of "No-Self" (Anatta)—I know I matter, but I no longer use "I" as the yardstick for all things.

II. Not Taking Others Seriously: The External Work of Establishing Boundaries

"Not taking others seriously" is the practice of dissolving "other-attachment" (Paragrahara).

If the former is about dissolving the self, the latter is about withdrawing the projections we place upon others. This is by no means coldness, arrogance, or disregard; it is a profound psychological "weaning." Many are physically adults but psychologically still "fetuses," dependent on others' emotional feedback to survive.

True "not taking others seriously" is about establishing sovereignty while maintaining respect:

  • When others are emotional, one can empathize without being entangled, understanding that their emotions are their own business, not one's responsibility.

  • When faced with others' expectations, one can consider them without obeying, knowing they are others' desires, not one's own duty.

  • When subjected to others' judgments, one can listen without being condemned, recognizing that it is merely their perspective, limited by their own biases, not the ultimate truth about oneself.

This requires immense mental fortitude. We must draw a clear line in our minds: here is me, there is you. At its deepest, this practice leads to the state of "Self-Mastery" (Vimukti)—I see you, I respect you, but I am no longer led by you.

III. Sequence and Pitfalls: The Non-Reversible Order of Practice

Understanding the hierarchical difference between these two lies in recognizing the sequence of cultivation.

If one rushes to "not take oneself seriously" without first establishing "self-worth," it easily slides into self-deprecation and people-pleasing. This "not caring" is false; its core is fear—the fear of being inadequate, leading one to erase oneself preemptively.

If one rushes to "not take others seriously" without establishing "psychological boundaries," it easily slides into arrogance and apathy. This "not caring" is also false; its core is defense—the fear of being hurt, leading one to build high walls to keep others at bay.

The true path of cultivation usually spirals upward:

  1. First, learn to "take oneself seriously": Build self-esteem and confirm one's intrinsic worth. This is the foundation.

  2. Then, practice "not taking oneself seriously": Shift from the obsession of "I am special" to the open-mindedness of "I am also ordinary."

  3. Finally, practice "not taking others seriously": With a solid inner core, gently withdraw excessive attention from others and establish healthy boundaries.

IV. Conclusion: Using Events as Mirrors, Following the Tao

The highest realm might be summarized as: "Taking nothing seriously, yet taking everything earnestly."

  • Not taking oneself seriously: I am not attached to the glory or shame associated with the label "I," yet I take seriously every thought and every choice I make in the present moment.

  • Not taking others seriously: I am not attached to the expectations associated with the label "you," yet I take seriously your existence as a living being, maintaining basic kindness and compassion.

When we are no longer attached to the feelings of "self" nor fearful of the gaze of "others," we become liberated from dualistic opposition. At this point, we no longer center ourselves on "I" or "you," but use "events" as mirrors and "the Way" (Tao) as our guide. This is true freedom.
