Over the past 170 years, global mean surface temperature has risen about 1.43℃​ above the pre-industrial baseline (1850–1900) according to WMO's 2025 estimate; the 2023–2025 triennial mean is the first on record to exceed the 1.5℃ threshold. Warming is not spatially uniform—the Arctic warms ~4× the global mean, and parts of the Tibetan Plateau ("Third Pole") warm 2–3×​ the global average. Glaciers are the most visible pointer: worldwide reference glaciers show negative mass balance from 1960 to 2025, accelerating after 1985; in 2025 the global reference-glacier mean mass balance was −1091 mm water equivalent, the second strongest ablation year on record. China's Urumqi Glacier No.1 (Tianshan) hit −1811 mm in 2025, thinning the whole glacier by nearly 2 m.

Warming raises ice temperature, lubricates the basal sliding plane, and increases meltwater pore pressure—shifting glaciers from "slow creep" to "dynamic instability." This is the shared substrate behind both the 8·26 Gyirong ice-rock avalanche and the Mushtagh II glacier snow slide.

也就是说:全球变暖把"枪膛上了弹",厄尔尼诺扣动"季节级扳机"。

English:

El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a natural interannual Pacific oscillation, not caused by warming; yet a warmer ocean gives every El Niño a higher energy floor. WMO's 3 September 2026 bulletin states Niño 3.4 SST anomalies are +1.5 to +2.0℃ and rising, likely becoming a super El Niño​ with ~100% probability of persisting to February 2027.

Its plateau transmission path: equatorial east-Pacific warming → weaker South Asian monsoon but stronger westerly southerly disturbances over Pamir–Himalaya → intensified diurnal freeze–thaw on the plateau in the warm half-year, black carbon deposited on snow surfaces absorbing heat → lowered albedo, meltwater seeping into ice–rock contact zones. Qin Dahe, discussing Gyirong, stated plainly: "2026 is a strong El Niño developing stage; since May, Indo-Pacific heat has been widespread, the plateau is no exception, basal glacier melt removes friction, and high-altitude ice collapses with moraine."

In short: global warming loads the gun; El Niño pulls the seasonal trigger.

三、冰川退缩:从"变薄"到"失稳"的相变

III. Glacier Retreat: A Phase Change from "Thinning" to "Instability"

Glacier retreat has three layers often conflated in public talk:

  1. Area retreat—terminus withdrawal, small glaciers vanishing. The Tibetan Plateau lost ~24% of glacier area in 60 years; ~7000 small glaciers disappeared entirely.
  2. Thickness thinning—negative mass balance, net ice loss. Urumqi No.1 and Pamir-adjacent glaciers in 2024–2025 approached record ablation two years running.
  3. Dynamic instability—higher ice temperature → softer ice → basal slip → high ice cliffs left hanging. This third step is the hazard source. Gyirong's Langtang Lirang north-slope ice-rock mass failed at 5200 m, dropped 2000 m, killed in 7 minutes; Mushtagh II's 7000 m snowpack failed under freeze–thaw + wind load but stopped mid-slope in uninhabited terrain—a control case of "instability without chain amplification".

Permafrost thaw is the hidden accomplice: ground ice in alpine permafrost is the "cement" of slopes; its loss removes bonding, active-layer thickening raises pore pressure, and rockfall–icefall–debris-flow chains couple more easily.

四、冻土退化:被忽视的"第二冰冻圈崩溃"

V. The Third Pole: A Field Amplifier of the Globe

High Mountain Asia (Himalaya–Karakoram–Pamir–Tibet) is the Third Pole—ice reserve second only to the poles, feeding the Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Yangtze, Yellow, Mekong; roughly 1.9 billion people​ depend on its runoff.

The Third Pole warms fast, snowlines rise, proglacial lakes expand (Nepal 1997–2017: lake count +181%, area +82%), GLOF risk jumps. But water crisis is biphasic: mid-term "glacier weeps its last water" raises flow and hazards; long-term after small glaciers die, dry-season baseflow drops, stressing irrigation and hydropower together. ICIMOD projects HKH glacier loss of 1/3 to 2/3 by 2100​ under current emissions, ~1/3 even under 1.5℃.

六、吉隆与慕士塔格:同一机理,两种出口

VI. Gyirong and Mushtagh: One Mechanism, Two Outlets

  • Mushtagh II snow avalanche: 7000 m snowpack fails under warm-half-year freeze–thaw + new-snow load + wind, but short channel, no moraine lake, no settlement, stops in uninhabited zone. A non-catastrophic sample​ under the same climate background.
    One cannot derive causality from the other, but they share a physical chain: warming lowers ice-rock stiffness → interannual oscillation (ENSO) supplies anomalous heat pulse → permafrost/snow interface lubricates → critical slope triggers.

七、未来十年:不是线性,是指数尾段

VII. The Next Decade: Not Linear, but the Tail of an Exponential

  3. 未开放冰川区(慕士塔格 1/2/3 号)硬性封控
  4. 欧亚大陆河源外交:把"亚洲水塔"稳定性写进跨境水资源协议

English:

WMO expects 86% probability that some year in 2026–2030 beats the warmest-year record; a super El Niño atop a 1.4℃+ baseline means the Third Pole will see repeated anomalous ablation windows across the 2026 winter–2027 summer melt season. China's National Climate Center forecasts rising plateau ice-collapse frequency, with GLOF and ice-rock-debris chains becoming a normal background risk for border ports.

What we can do is not "save the glaciers" (physically partly committed already) but:

  1. Build InSAR+GNSS deformation nets on high glaciers (aim 30-min warning for Gyirong-type events)
  2. Repeat LiDAR/laser surveys of moraine-dam lakes + breach numerical playbooks
  3. Hard-close unopened glacier zones (Mushtagh I/II/III)
  4. Treat "Asian Water Tower" stability as a transboundary water-diplomacy clause, not a domestic footnote

八、冰川退场时,人类退到哪一层?

VIII. Closing: When Glaciers Retreat, to Which Layer Does Humanity Retreat?

中文:

全球变暖是世纪尺度的位移,厄尔尼诺是年际尺度的抖动,冰川退缩与冻土退化是冰冻圈对这个位移的两种语法。慕士塔格的雪雾与吉隆的泥石流,不过是同一句气候长句里的两个标点——一个逗号,一个句号。

保护冰川不是审美工程,是保住 19 亿人旱季杯底那层水、保住冻土里没醒来的碳、保住边境山谷里还能被预警的 7 分钟。

Global warming is a centennial displacement; El Niño is an interannual jitter; glacier retreat and permafrost thaw are two grammars of the cryosphere answering that displacement. The snow cloud on Mushtagh and the debris flow in Gyirong are merely two punctuation marks in one long climate sentence—a comma, and a full stop.

Protecting glaciers is not aesthetic work; it is keeping the thin water at the bottom of 1.9 billion people's dry-season cups, keeping the carbon in permafrost asleep, and keeping those 7 minutes in border valleys still predictable.
