Heaven Has No Favorites, Yet Keeps Company with the Good
Reconciling a great grievance must leave some grievance behind.
To repay hatred with virtue—how can that be called true goodness?
Therefore the sage holds the left tally, yet does not press the debt.
The virtuous oversee the covenant; the vicious oversee the tax.
Heaven’s Way has no kin, yet always walks with the good.
A surface paradox: if Heaven is impartial, why does it “side with the good”?
- 既然无亲,就不该偏爱;
This sounds like a contradiction:
Impartiality on one side, favoritism on the other.
Heaven here is not a grandfather in the sky handing out rewards.
The Dao of Heaven is the logic of how things actually move.
It is not that Heaven chooses the good.
The good have chosen the current of Heaven.
Here, “善人” is not merely “a nice person.”
That is the sentimental reading.
- 水善利万物而不争;
- 善行无辙迹;
- 善言无瑕谪;
The word shan 善 means “good at,” “fitting,” “well-aligned.”
A 善人 is one who lives without friction against the Dao.
The good person is not weak.
The good person is well-tuned.
The sage holds the left tally, yet does not press the debt.
He keeps the record.
He just closes the collections department.
- 边界还在;
- 教训还在;
- 清醒还在;
To forgive cheaply is to erase the lesson.
To hold the tally without pressing it is to keep the lesson and drop the bitterness.
The tax-collector mentality always asks: What do I get? What are you owed me?
The covenant mentality asks: How do we live without breeding another grievance?
Heaven is not unfair because it ignores your resume.
Heaven is fair because it has no resume.
No bribe reaches the Dao.
No prayer bends the river.
But the ground that is low, soft, open, and unclogged will always receive the water.
So why does Heaven “always stand with the good”?
- 善人不树敌,所以少祸;
- 善人不追债,所以少内耗;
- 善人不逞强,所以少折;
- 善人容人,所以人多归之;
A life that does not insist on collecting its grievances
is a life the Dao can move through.
The rain has no favorites.
It simply fills the open field first.
The hardest objection is ancient.
If Heaven loves the good, why do the gentle starve?
Why do the cruel laugh late into the night?
- 天道看的是“势”,不是“这一辈子的小账”;
- 善人未必免祸,但善人少造新怨、少种新毒;
A robber may die rich.
A sage may die poor.
But the robber dies entangled; the sage dies unburdened.
Heaven does not promise the good person victory.
It promises them lightness.
In modern life, everyone holds a left tally.
- 当年那句误会,你还拿出来算;
- 前任的背叛,你十年后仍向空气讨利息;
- 职场里被冤枉一次,你把所有人预设成敌人;
Laozi would say: keep the tally, close the collections office.

True goodness, in the Daoist sense, is not a moral costume.
- 对人客气但心里记账;
- 不吵不闹但暗自委屈;
- 表面宽容但等待报复;
- 知人有过,不把人钉在过错里;
- 知世有亏,不把一生押在索赔上;
- 知自己有理,却不靠“我对”把别人逼到墙角;
Goodness is not a bribe to the universe.
Goodness is the shape of a life that flows.
Strip it to one sentence:
Or another:
Or, more quietly:
Heaven has no relatives.
And yet the good are never walking alone—
because they stopped walking against the wind.
If you want the Dao to “be with you,” don’t pray harder.
Don’t perform more goodness for the camera.
Just become the lower field:
- 不抢高坡;
- 不追每一笔债;
- 不把每次受伤都写成战书;
Rain will come.
It always does.
And when it comes, the open ground is full first.
Heaven has no favorites—
yet it is always with those who are good at yielding,
good at forgetting the debt,
good at staying soft enough to receive the world.
