The Universe: A Dance of Space-Time and the Question of Being
Yu is all space; Zhou is all time.
The term "Universe" first appeared in Shizi (Master Shi Jiao, Warring States period):
"All directions above and below are Yu; all past and future are Zhou."
This minimalist definition predated similar Western concepts by centuries, and astonishingly prefigured the modern physical picture of space-time unity.
Laozi said: "All things under heaven are born of Being; Being is born of Non-Being." (Daodejing, Ch.40)
Zhuangzi pushed further in "Equalizing All Things": "Heaven and earth are one finger; all things are one horse." — All boundaries are illusory constructs.
The Daoist "Non-Being" (Wu) is not emptiness, but uncrystallized potential. The universe was not "created"; it spontaneously emerges from the Dao, like breath — Being and Non-Being mutually generating.
After Buddhism entered China, it fused with native thought, forming a unique cosmology. Core doctrine:
"All dharmas arise from causes and conditions; all dharmas cease when conditions dissolve."
All phenomena arise dependently, lacking independent essence — hence "Emptiness" (Shunyata).
The Diamond Sutra summarizes with six metaphors: "All conditioned dharmas are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, shadows, like dew, like lightning — thus should you view them."
Here, "Zhou" (time) is deconstructed as a flux of instantaneous arising-and-ceasing: the past has perished, the future has not arrived, the present does not dwell.
The Yijing (Book of Changes) states: "Continuous begetting — that is Change."
The universe is not static, but an eternally creative process. Yin and Yang interact, generating all things.
Cheng Hao said: "The great virtue of heaven and earth is life." — The ultimate attribute of the universe is not mere existence, but becoming.
This is not mere subjective idealism — it suggests that the boundary between observer and observed is itself woven into the fabric of the universe. This resonates profoundly with quantum mechanics, where measurement collapses the wave function.
Thales said "all is water" — the first to explain the cosmos through a natural principle rather than myth.
Heraclitus declared: "No man steps in the same river twice." — the universe is eternal flux (Panta Rhei).
Parmenides proposed the opposite: true "Being" is unchanging; change is illusion. This tension — change vs. permanence — runs through all Western philosophy to this day.
Plato's Cave Allegory: prisoners mistake shadows on a wall for reality.
The true world is the World of Forms; the sensory world is but an imperfect projection.
— This bears striking structural similarity to Buddhist "illusion" teachings and the modern Holographic Principle.
Kant, in the Critique of Pure Reason, distinguished:
- Phenomena: the world as we experience it through space, time, and categories
- Noumena: things-in-themselves, unknowable
"Space and time are not properties of things-in-themselves, but a priori forms of our intuition."
This implies: "Yu" and "Zhou" may not be objective properties of the universe, but filters of the human mind.
Heidegger, in Being and Time, proposed: Being can only be questioned through the temporality of Dasein (human existence).
"Zhou" is not an objective timeline, but the unfolding mode of Dasein's being-in-the-world. Past, present, and future are not three points, but an integral structure of "being-toward-death".
The modern Holographic Principle states: all information within a volume is fully encoded on its boundary surface. 3D space may be a holographic projection of 2D information.
This resonates across two millennia with the Buddhist "a mustard seed contains Mount Sumeru" and Zhuangzi's "heaven and earth are one finger".
Quantum entanglement: measure one particle, the other instantaneously changes — Einstein's "spooky action at a distance".
Huayan Buddhism's "Indra's Net": every jewel reflects all others, infinitely. Separation is illusion; all is one.
The Second Law of Thermodynamics gives time's arrow (entropy increase), yet fundamental equations are time-symmetric.
Time's asymmetry may arise from special initial conditions — the Big Bang's extremely low entropy.
The ancients' term "Laijin" (coming-present) places future alongside now, suggesting time is not a pre-written line but the present moment continuously unfolding.

If "illusion" = does not exist → No. The universe as mathematical structure, information field, and conscious experience is real at some level.
If "illusion" = not what it appears to be → Very likely. Space may be projection, time may be emergent, causality may run backward.
The Diamond Sutra's closing verse may be the most elegant answer:
"All conditioned dharmas are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, shadows, like dew, like lightning — thus should you view them."
Not a denial of the phenomenal world's existence, but non-attachment to its fixity. The universe is a miracle in progress, and you are its witness — or rather, you are the miracle itself.
Yu is the stage; Zhou is the melody.
Without Yu, Zhou has no place to unfold; without Zhou, Yu is but a still painting.
And we — we are both audience and player.
Six characters. Everything said.
— Written at the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern physics, 2026
