Returning Inward to Find One’s Calling: Listening to the Soul’s Summons in the Depths of Silence

We live in an age of extreme extroversion. From the moment we open our eyes, the world's noise floods in—the "perfect lives" of others on social media, the ever-rising "standards of success" in the workplace, consumerism's promise that "to possess is to be happy." We are trained to be excellent outward seekers: seeking approval, wealth, status, love.

But the paradox is: the more we grasp outward, the more impoverished we feel.

In psychology, there is a well-known concept—extrinsic motivation. When the driving force of a person's behavior comes entirely from external rewards or social approval, their intrinsic drive is gradually hollowed out. This is why so many "successful people in others' eyes" suddenly feel an indescribable emptiness in the dead of night. They gained the world, but lost themselves.

Inward awareness is not an escape from reality, but a deeper form of courage.

Most people fear solitude; they fear silence. Because in silence, we are forced to face the self that daily busyness has covered up—the self that is wounded, desiring, gifted, and fearful. But it is precisely in this "darkness" that the seed of one's calling germinates.

The philosopher Martin Heidegger once said: "Conscience calls only in silence." Your calling will not descend amidst applause; it whispers to you in a faint yet firm voice only when you are alone with yourself.

Inward awareness means you begin to ask certain "useless" questions:

  • If no one were watching, would I still do this?
  • If wealth and fame were unreachable, would this thing still be worth a lifetime of devotion?
  • Where exactly does that "indescribable pull" within me point to?

These questions have no standard answers. But they are the coordinate system of the soul—only when you stop measuring yourself with the world's ruler do you truly stand on your own ground for the first time.

Career

志业 Calling

Here, we must clarify a fundamental distinction—career vs. calling.

A career is driven by external rewards (salary, status), fueled by fear (fear of falling behind, fear of poverty), marked by countdown ("how long till I get off work"), met with retreat when frustrated, and ends at retirement.

A calling is driven by an inner summons (meaning, mission), fueled by love (passion, devotion), marked by flow ("time disappears"), met with deepening and iteration when frustrated, and ends only when life itself ends.

When you seek outward, you look for a "good career"—high salary, prestige, stability. This is understandable, but it is the logic of survival.

When you turn inward, you are looking for the answer to the question "who am I." A calling is not a job you "find"; it is a way of being that you live out.

(Solitude and Silence)

Set aside a period of "zero input" each day. No phone, no socializing, no information consumption. Let the brain's Default Mode Network activate—neuroscience shows that it is precisely in this state that the brain engages in self-referential thinking, integrating memory and identity.

(Tracing the Tracks of Flow)

Look back on your life. Those moments when you forgot time, forgot hunger, forgot others' judgments—what were they pointing to? Writing? Creating? Helping others? Deconstructing complex problems? Flow is not accidental; it is the coordinate of your calling.

(Listening to the Body's Wisdom)

Your body is more honest than your mind. When doing something, does your energy expand or contract? Are you excited or exhausted? Expansion is a "yes"; contraction is a "no." The body does not lie.

(Writing and Dialogue)

Keep a journal, write morning pages, have deep conversations with trusted people. Words are the developer of thought—when you write down vague feelings, the contours of your calling gradually come into focus.

(Loneliness)

When you no longer follow the crowd, you will find yourself on a road less traveled. You will be misunderstood, questioned, even doubted. But remember: the beginning of every calling is a lone battle.

(The Agony of Uncertainty)

"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves... Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer."

(The Death of the Old Identity)

When you turn inward, you will find that the old self—the one that catered to others, chased external standards, lived in others' expectations—must die. This is not a gentle transformation; it is a small death.

Nietzsche said: "One must still have chaos in oneself to give birth to a dancing star."

The end of inward awareness is not finding a "perfect job." Its end is—you finally become yourself.**

When calling and existence become one, work is no longer "work" but an expression of being. You are not "doing" something; you are being something. Your life itself is your calling.

If you are reading this, and there is a faint resonance in your heart—trust that resonance.

It is the whisper of your soul, the voice of your inner truth finally reaching your consciousness after piercing through layers of noise.

"Is this what the world wants, or what my heart truly desires?"

Then, bravely, choose the latter.

Once, and again, and again.

Until one day, looking back, you realize you have walked a path of your own.

That path is called calling.

That path is called coming home.
