Between Truth and Falsehood

Between Truth and Falsehood: Discerning the Reality of Life in the Information Deluge

Introduction: We Live in a Labyrinth of “Reality”

Zhuangzi once dreamt he was a butterfly, and upon waking wondered: “Am I Zhuangzi who dreamt of being a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming of being Zhuangzi?”

Two millennia later, we still ask: What is real?

Is it the flickering data on our screens? The opinions reflected in others’ eyes? Or that undeceivable heart in the silence of solitude?

In Buddhism, “truth” (真, zhen) and “falsehood” (妄, wang) are not two opposing objects, but two states of the same mind. In delusion, we cling to the false as real; in awakening, the false itself reveals its true nature.

I. Falsehood: How Are We Deceived?

Wang corresponds to the Sanskrit viparyāsa—reversal or perversion. It means clinging to the impermanent as permanent, the painful as pleasurable, the selfless as self, and the impure as pure.

1. Sensory Falsehood: Seeing Is Not Believing

Modern neuroscience confirms that what we “see” is a model constructed by the brain. The “red” we perceive is merely the brain’s interpretation of specific wavelengths.

Buddhism calls this “eye disease”—like seeing flowers in the sky due to an eye ailment. We cling to “facts” provided by our senses, unaware they are filtered illusions.

2. Conceptual Falsehood: The Prison of Language

Language is a tool for thought, yet a breeding ground for delusion.

We invent concepts like “success,” “failure,” “beauty,” and “ugliness,” then bury ourselves alive within them.

You are not a “failure”; you simply experienced an outcome that fell short of expectations. You are not a “rich person”; you merely have temporary access to some currency. When we mistake labels for essence, we enter the realm of wang.

3. The Falsehood of Self: The Most Stubborn Illusion

This is the core of all delusion—ātma-grāha, the attachment to self.

Observe: the you of yesterday, today, and tomorrow—your cells renew, your thoughts flow. Which one is the “true self”?

We cling to an unchanging “I,” striving, defending, and worrying for this phantom. Yet, as the Diamond Sutra states: “All phenomena marked by characteristics are false and illusory.” The image clung to as “self” is itself delusion.

II. Truth: Peeling the Onion to Its Core

What is zhen (truth)? Buddhism does not preach nihilism, but tathatā—suchness. Truth is not a “thing,” but a state of “thusness” or “as-it-is.”

1. Impermanence Is Truth

We crave permanence, but the truth is that all things flow.

A flower blooming then wilting—this is truth. A relationship moving from intimacy to distance—this is truth. An emotion shifting from anger to calm—this is truth.

Acknowledging impermanence is not pessimism; it is ceasing to fight reality. When you accept “change,” you touch zhen.

2. No-Self Is Truth

Truth has no substance; it is like space.

When we stop constructing a solid “I,” true wisdom manifests. This does not mean you don’t exist, but that your existence is interdependent and conditioned. The air you breathe, the food you eat, the education you received—all co-create the present you. Seeing this is seeing zhen.

3. The Present Moment Is Truth

The past has ceased; the future has not yet arisen. The only reality is this present moment.

Yet our minds often wander: reliving past glories (wang) or fearing future crises (wang).

Zhen is here, now, in this mind. Mindfulness is the art of training the mind to dwell in the present.

III. Non-Duality of Truth and Falsehood: Delusion and Awakening Are One Thought Apart

This is the profound part: Truth and falsehood are originally one.

1. Afflictions Are Enlightenment

The Sixth Patriarch Huineng said: “Afflictions are enlightenment.”

The deluded thought itself is the material for awakening. When you realize you are caught in delusion, that very “realization” is truth.

Like waves are the movement of the ocean, waves are not the ocean’s enemy but its manifestation. Deluded thoughts are not the foe of reality; they are the path to it.

2. Using the False to Cultivate the True

The body is false (impermanent), yet we use it to practice. Language is false (conceptual), yet we use it to convey wisdom. The world is false (illusory), yet we awaken within it.

This is called “using the false to cultivate the true.” Do not reject delusion; see through it to the truth behind it.

IV. Discerning Falsehood and Realizing Truth in Modern Life

1. Informational Falsehood: Filter Bubbles and Echo Chambers

Algorithms feed you information based on your preferences, weaving a “reality you like.”

Discerning falsehood: Actively read viewpoints you disagree with; break the filter bubble.

Realizing truth: Return to raw data and firsthand experience, not secondhand conclusions.

2. Emotional Falsehood: Consumerism and Anxiety Marketing

Ads tell you: “Buy this, and you’ll be perfect.” Society tells you: “If you’re not successful by 30, you’re finished.”

Discerning falsehood: Detect the manipulation behind emotions. Ask: “Do I truly need this, or is this a manufactured need?”

Realizing truth: Seek spiritual richness in material simplicity. Contentment is the only reality.

3. Relational Falsehood: The Perfect Life Behind Filters

The curated life on social media is often a performance.

Discerning falsehood: Recognize that others show only highlights, not the full picture.

Realizing truth: Remain kind and honest where no one sees. Sincere relationships need no filters.

Like Drinking Water, One Knows for Oneself If It Is Warm or Cold

The debate between truth and falsehood must ultimately be grounded in practice.

Zhen is the unashamed calm when, in the dead of night, you ask your own heart.

Wang is the blind following of the crowd amidst the hustle and bustle.

Do not seek “reality” outwardly, for all answers lie where your deluded thoughts subside.

May you and I, in this complex world, possess the wisdom-eye to see through illusions and witness the truth.
