Two Wings of the Same Bird: The Union of Bodhicitta and Emptiness in Buddhist Practice

In the entire corpus of the Buddha’s teachings, if one were to ask which two dharmas most perfectly capture the heart-essence of Mahāyāna Buddhism, the answer would be nearly unanimous: Bodhicitta (the mind of awakening) and Prajñā (the wisdom of emptiness). As Nāgārjuna states in his Mūlamadhyamakakārikā: “Because of emptiness, all phenomena are possible; without emptiness, nothing is possible.” And as Śāntideva declares in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: “Why say more? The childish work for their own sake, while the Buddha acts only for others. Just look at this difference!”

Bodhicitta is the great compassionate vow—“May all sentient beings be free from suffering and attain perfect awakening”—and serves as the engine of Buddhist practice. The wisdom of emptiness is the navigation system that illuminates the selflessness of all phenomena and cuts through reification. Neither is complete without the other: without bodhicitta, emptiness easily slides into the Hīnayāna pursuit of mere self-liberation, or even a cold nihilism. Without emptiness, bodhicitta easily falls into clinging to the inherent existence of “self” and “others,” breeding exhaustion, pride, and discouragement.

I. Bodhicitta: The Lifeblood of the Mahāyāna

1. The Relative and Ultimate Bodhicitta

Bodhicitta is divided into relative (conventional) bodhicitta and ultimate bodhicitta.

  • Relative bodhicitta is the aspirational mind—“For the benefit of all beings, I vow to attain buddhahood”—and the engaged mind that practices the six perfections (pāramitās). It is the primary practice of bodhisattvas on the paths of accumulation and preparation. Its essence is the exchanging of self and other: shifting from cherishing oneself to cherishing others, and from abandoning sentient beings to courageously carrying their suffering. Śāntideva offers a piercing reflection: “No worldly pleasure can ever satisfy the mind—except the rain of benefiting others, which alone brings true contentment.”

  • Ultimate bodhicitta is the realization of the ultimate nature of reality by first-bhūmi bodhisattvas, through non-conceptual wisdom. It is the non-dual union of emptiness and great compassion. As the Abhisamayālaṅkāra states: “The mind of awakening is generated for the sake of others, aspiring to unsurpassed perfect awakening.”

2. The Power of Bodhicitta

Bodhicitta is called the “seed of all buddhas” because it completely transforms the narrow mind of ordinary beings. In the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, bodhicitta is compared to a “vajra jewel” that shatters the mountain of afflictions, and to the “fire at the end of an eon” that burns away all karmic fuel. Even a single moment of genuine bodhicitta surpasses the combined merit of all śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas.

Yet, generating bodhicitta is not instantaneous. It requires sustained cultivation: contemplating that all beings have been our mothers, recalling their kindness; contemplating their present suffering, and arousing unbearable compassion; contemplating that they are no different from oneself, and arousing equanimity. This practice deepens compassion (karuṇā).

II. Emptiness: The Wisdom that Severs the Root of Saṃsāra

1. Dependent Origination: The True Meaning of Emptiness

Emptiness (śūnyatā) is often misunderstood as nihilism—the view that “nothing exists.” This is precisely the extreme of annihilation (ucchedavāda) that Buddhism firmly rejects. Nāgārjuna defines emptiness through dependent origination: “Whatever arises dependently, I call that emptiness. It is a provisional designation, and it is the Middle Way.”

Emptiness does not negate the conventional existence of phenomena; rather, it negates that phenomena possess an intrinsic, independent, unchanging essence (svabhāva). A table is made of wood; wood comes from a tree; the tree depends on sunlight, water, and soil. Tracing this back, we find no “table-in-itself” that exists independently of causes and conditions. This is selflessness (anātman).

2. Cultivating Emptiness: From Study to Realization

To cultivate emptiness, one must first establish the correct view through study and contemplation. One studies the reasoning of the Prāsaṅgika Madhyamaka school—such as the “reasoning of the one and the many” or the “vajra sliver reasoning”—to logically dismantle the reification of both the self (pudgala) and phenomena (dharma).

Next, one practices śamatha and vipaśyanā in meditation. When śamatha (calm-abiding) is stabilized, one applies the correct view in vipaśyanā (insight): Who is practicing? What is the object of practice? The subject and object are both like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows. As the Heart Sūtra says: “When one directly perceives the emptiness of the five aggregates, one transcends all suffering and distress.”

The realization of emptiness directly counteracts ego-clinging (ātma-grāha) and phenomena-clinging (dharma-grāha). When ego-clinging is broken, the afflictive obscurations (kleśāvaraṇa) are severed, bringing liberation. When phenomena-clinging is broken, the cognitive obscurations (jñeyāvaraṇa) are attenuated, bringing omniscience.

III. The Union: The Non-Dual Integration of Compassion and Wisdom

1. Emptiness Held within Bodhicitta

Candrakīrti states in the Madhyamakāvatāra: “By realizing the emptiness of all phenomena, the mind does not grasp at characteristics. Yet, due to compassion, one does not cling to emptiness and thus does not fall into the passive nirvāṇa of the śrāvakas.”

This is the crucial turning point of the Mahāyāna: the view of emptiness must be held within bodhicitta. In meditation, when you realize emptiness and see “no-self,” without great compassion you may think: “Since there is no self, who suffers? Why bother saving others?” This leads to the passive nirvāṇa of the Hīnayāna. But with great compassion as the guiding force, you see the suffering of beings within the context of no-self. Beings, ignorant of selflessness, cling to a self and thus suffer endlessly in saṃsāra. Consequently, the unbearable compassion for their suffering arises, propelling the bodhisattva to “not abide in saṃsāra due to wisdom, and not abide in nirvāṇa due to compassion.”

2. Bodhicitta Enhanced by Emptiness

On the other hand, bodhicitta requires the empowerment of emptiness. Why do ordinary beings often feel exhausted when practicing altruism? Because, at a subtle level, we feel that “I” am helping “him,” that “I” am tired, and that “he” is difficult to benefit. This subtle clinging to the self (pudgala-ātman) and to phenomena (dharma-ātman) is the root of exhaustion and regression.

When we apply the correct view of emptiness, we recall the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra: “A bodhisattva should give gifts without abiding in forms… If a bodhisattva practices giving without abiding in phenomena, it is like a person with eyes walking in the sunlight, seeing various colors.”

When practicing the six perfections, one contemplates the threefold emptiness: no giver, no receiver, and no gift. Such bodhicitta is as vast as space—limitless and inexhaustible. This is “wondrous existence arising from true emptiness”: precisely because everything is empty, the activity of benefiting others becomes possible and never runs dry.

IV. Integration into Daily Practice

How can we integrate these two precious dharmas into daily life?

(Morning Aspiration)

Upon waking, before getting up, contemplate: “For the benefit of all beings, may all my actions today become causes for awakening.”

(Contemplating Emptiness in Activity)

While working or interacting with others, contemplate that all is like a dream or illusion. When emotions arise, contemplate their selflessness—neither following nor resisting them.

(The Threefold Emptiness in Action)

After helping others, dedicate the merit. Contemplate: “There is no mark of self, no mark of others, no mark of sentient beings, and no mark of lifespan.”

(Evening Practice)

Before sleeping, view the day’s experiences as a dream, and fall asleep resting in the non-dual state of clarity and emptiness.

Conclusion: Two Wings of a Bird, Two Wheels of a Cart

As Maitreya states in the Mahāyānasūtrālaṅkāra: “Bodhicitta is the precursor; compassion and wisdom are the ultimate fulfillment.”

Bodhicitta and emptiness are not two separate dharmas, but two facets of one reality. Great compassion is the dynamic expression of emptiness; emptiness is the very nature of great compassion. As the Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sūtra says: “With the sword of wisdom, cut down the thieves of affliction; with the water of great compassion, benefit all sentient beings.”

May we all possess these two wings, soar across the great ocean of birth and death, and reach the shore of ultimate peace.
