Using Wealth to Cultivate Oneself: Modern Insights from the Confucian View of Wealth

Wealth has always been an eternal topic in human society. From ancient times to the present, countless people have rushed about for it—some becoming illustrious through wealth, others destroyed by it. More than two thousand years ago, the Great Learning offered a single line: "The benevolent use wealth to cultivate themselves; the unbenevolent sacrifice themselves to accumulate wealth." This sentence long ago illuminated two radically different attitudes toward wealth and revealed a timeless wisdom—using wealth to cultivate oneself.

I. What Does "Using Wealth to Cultivate Oneself" Mean?

The core of "using wealth to cultivate oneself" lies in the character fa (发)—to manifest, to accomplish. It does not mean piling up external vanity and pleasure with wealth, but rather transforming wealth into resources for self-cultivation, moral integrity, and benefiting others, thereby allowing one's life value to be manifested and elevated.

Confucius said: "Riches and honor—these are what people desire. But if they cannot be obtained in the proper way, I will not abide in them." (The Analects, Book 4) Confucianism never denies people's legitimate pursuit of a prosperous life. On the contrary, Confucius candidly stated: "If wealth could be pursued, I would do it even as a humble whip-holder" (The Analects, Book 7), acknowledging that the pursuit of wealth is a natural human desire. But the key lies here—acquire it through the proper way, and use it with the right purpose.

Fan Zhongyan grew up in poverty but resolved to become either "a great prime minister or a great physician." Later, when he rose to the position of Vice Grand Councilor—one of the highest offices in the Song dynasty—he devoted most of his lifetime salary to purchasing charitable estates, establishing free schools, and relieving his clan members. His wealth was not used to build mansions or keep singing girls, but was transformed into educational opportunities for thousands of poor students, and into the cultural foundation that sustained the Fan clan for centuries. This is the very model of "using wealth to cultivate oneself"—wealth is like water: it flows to the low places, nourishing all around, and in doing so, the giver's life becomes broader and deeper.

II. Sacrificing Oneself for Wealth: A Life Enslaved by Riches

The opposite of "using wealth to cultivate oneself" is "sacrificing oneself to accumulate wealth"—making one's body and life a tool for earning riches, turning the person into a slave of wealth.

The Great Learning immediately follows with this warning: "There has never been a case where those above loved benevolence and those below did not love righteousness; there has never been a case where one who loves righteousness fails to bring affairs to completion; there has never been a case where the wealth in the treasury truly belonged to its keeper." The meaning is: if those in power do not root themselves in benevolence, even a full treasury will not truly belong to them—because excessive accumulation inevitably loses the people's hearts, and once lost, the treasury will eventually be taken away.

History repeatedly confirms this lesson. Shi Chong and Wang Kai flaunted their wealth against each other in extravagant competitions, only to meet destruction along with their families. He Shen wielded immense power and amassed untold corruption; at the confiscation of his property, his assets equaled 800 million taels of silver—equivalent to fifteen years of the Qing government's fiscal revenue—yet he himself ended up being forced to commit suicide in prison. They were undeniably "rich," but their very "richness" was precisely the cause of their ruin—because their entire lives merely served as footnotes to wealth, rather than letting wealth serve as a footnote to their own lives.

Modern society is no different. How many people are still replying to work messages at three in the morning, ignoring a string of abnormal indicators on their physical examination reports? How many companies, in pursuit of profit maximization, pollute the environment, exploit employees, and manufacture counterfeit goods? Are these not contemporary versions of "sacrificing oneself for wealth"? The body becomes a money-making machine; the soul is pawned to desire. Even if such a person is wrapped in thousands of gold coins, their inner world must surely be a barren wasteland.

III. The Three Realms of the Confucian View of Wealth

The Confucian view of wealth is not a simple matter of "valuing righteousness over profit," but a well-structured, inside-out complete system.

The First Realm: Righteousness as Supreme—Acquiring Wealth with Integrity

Confucius said: "The gentleman understands righteousness; the petty person understands profit." (The Analects, Book 4). This does not mean the gentleman does not care for wealth, but rather that the gentleman's guiding principle is moral duty. When Mencius met King Hui of Liang, he opened with: "Why must Your Majesty speak of profit? Let us speak only of benevolence and righteousness." (Mencius, Book 1). He was not opposed to economic development, but was emphasizing that if an entire state is driven solely by profit, that state is in grave danger.

Acquiring wealth with integrity means that the source of wealth must conform to ethics and law. This remains the most basic bottom line of business today—no fraud, no plunder, no self-interest at the expense of others.

The Second Realm: Dispersing Wealth to Win the People—Using It with Purpose

The Great Learning quotes the Book of Chu: "The state of Chu has no treasure other than goodness." It also quotes Jiu Fan: "The exiled have no treasure other than benevolent kinship." True treasure is not gold, silver, pearls, or jade, but good deeds and benevolent love. The text further states: "There is a great Way to generating wealth: let the producers be many, the consumers few; let the workers be diligent, and the spenders measured—then wealth will always be sufficient."

This puts forward two principles for using wealth: first, moderate consumption ("few consumers" and "measured spending"); second, giving back to society (the essence of "the great Way to generating wealth" is allowing wealth to circulate beneficially within society).

Fan Li became wealthy three times, each time dispersing thousands of gold coins to the poor and distant relatives, then starting over. He understood a truth: wealth can only regenerate itself through circulation; hoarding only causes it to rot. This coincides with the modern economic concept of "trickle-down effect" and resonates deeply with the idea of "tertiary distribution."

The Third Realm: Virtue as the Root—Transcending Wealth

The Great Learning states at the very beginning: "Virtue is the root; wealth is the branch. To treat the branch as the root and the root as the branch is to stir the people to contention and plunder." Virtue is the root; wealth is merely the branches. If one treats the branches as the root and the root as the branches, it leads to a chaotic situation where superiors and subordinates contend for profit and plunder from one another.

What Confucianism ultimately pursues is not wealth itself, but "inner sageliness and outer kingliness"—internal moral cultivation and external achievement. Wealth can be an aid in realizing this goal, but it must never become the goal itself. As Wang Yangming said: "It is easy to crush bandits in the mountains; it is difficult to crush the bandits in one's own heart." A person's greatest enemy is never poverty, but the greed and confusion within.

IV. Modern Relevance: Returning Wealth to Its Proper Place

China today stands in an era of unprecedented material abundance. We are closer to the goal of common prosperity than at any point in history, and we need, more than ever, to clarify the relationship between wealth and life.

For Individuals: Do Not Be a Miser of Wealth

Every person should ask themselves a question: If I lost all my wealth tomorrow, who would I still be?

If your answer is "nothing at all," then you have already become a slave to wealth. If your answer is "I am still a person with knowledge, character, and the capacity to love," then you are already on the path of "using wealth to cultivate yourself." Wealth should be a tool for realizing your self-worth, not the measure that defines your worth.

For Enterprises: From Shareholder Primacy to Stakeholder Win-Win

The modern corporate system long adhered to the creed of "shareholder primacy," which follows exactly the same logic as "sacrificing oneself for wealth"—everything for profit, with people reduced to mere factors of production. Today, however, more and more enterprises are embracing ESG principles (Environmental, Social, and Governance), recognizing that a company's true mission is not only to generate profit but to create value for society.

This is precisely the echo of the Confucian idea of "using wealth to cultivate oneself" in modern business—when enterprises use the wealth they create to improve the environment, reward employees, and serve communities, they are using wealth to cultivate a greater community of life.

For Society: Tertiary Distribution and Common Prosperity

The Fourth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee first proposed "giving play to the role of tertiary distribution and developing public welfare undertakings such as charity." In essence, tertiary distribution is the socialized practice of "using wealth to cultivate oneself"—encouraging those who have become prosperous first to channel their wealth back into society through charitable donations, volunteer services, and other means, helping those who have yet to prosper.

This is not "robbing the rich to help the poor," but rather allowing wealth, after completing individual accumulation, to continue fulfilling its social mission—nourishing the growth of more people's lives. This stands in sharp contrast to "the unbenevolent sacrificing themselves for wealth": the former lets wealth benefit society; the latter lets society be devoured by wealth.

Conclusion

"The wealthy use wealth to cultivate themselves"—six characters that encapsulate the highest Chinese wisdom regarding wealth. They tell us: the true meaning of wealth lies not in possession, but in transformation; not in hoarding, but in circulation; not in proving who you are, but in helping you become who you are meant to be.

In this era of material abundance yet spiritual anxiety, may each of us regain that clarity: do not let your body run itself ragged for wealth; let wealth pave the way for your life.

"The benevolent use wealth to cultivate themselves; the unbenevolent sacrifice themselves to accumulate wealth."
