Advancing in Virtue, Cultivating One's Craft: The Long Trek Along the Right Path
The Dao and De: An Ancient Equation
To walk the Dao and gain something from it—that is De.
The Dao is, by definition, the right path.
These two sentences may sound plain, but they unlock the original code of the word "Daode" (morality) in the Chinese intellectual world. In the pre-Qin context, "De" was not the kind of behavioral rule hung on a wall in later ages, nor was it an external social judgment. Its ancient meaning was extremely concise—De means to obtain. You walk the Dao, and as you walk, something real accumulates within you. That accumulation is your De.
And "Dao," etymologically composed of "to walk" and "head," originally meant a road traveled by people, extended to mean the proper course all things should follow. The Dao carries an inherent rightness—it is not just any road, but the right one, the open one, the one aligned with fundamental order.
Put together, what we get is a picture far more vivid than the later moralistic preaching:
The Dao is the right path; De is what you genuinely solidify and internalize after stepping onto it.
This is not a certificate awarded to you by others. These are calluses earned by your own soles, sinews grown from your own bones.
Accumulating Goodness into Virtue: The Work Is in Daily Life
Accumulate goodness into virtue, and spiritual clarity will be obtained of itself.
What Xunzi offers here is a complete methodology of self-cultivation. He transforms "De" from a static concept into a dynamic timeline:
|
Stage |
Keyword |
含义 Meaning |
|---|---|---|
|
起点 Origin |
善 Goodness |
Concrete steps along the right path—doing rightly in each single matter. |
|
过程 Process |
积 Accumulation |
Not occasional acts, but walking the right path day after day until it becomes habit. |
|
结果 Outcome |
成德 Becoming Virtue |
Steps accumulate; within, a stable character belonging to oneself takes shape. |
|
升华 Transcendence |
Spontaneous Clarity |
When virtue matures within, the mind becomes spontaneously clear and luminous, needing nothing from without. |
Notice the words "zide" (self-obtained). They echo precisely the "de" (to obtain) from our first section. Spiritual clarity is not something you pray for, not something you beg for, not something you can borrow by reading a few books—it is obtained by yourself. You walk the path you ought to walk, take enough of the right steps, and clarity grows from within you.
This resonates across time and space with Aristotle's virtue ethics in the Western tradition. Aristotle said:
"We become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts."
Nicomachean Ethics
Xunzi would say: Exactly so. Virtue is not an innate seed, but a path walked into existence.
Cultivating One's Craft: The Other Face of Virtue
"Advancing in virtue, cultivating one's craft"—four characters from the Qian hexagram of the Yijing:
"The noble person advances in virtue and cultivates their craft. Loyalty and trustworthiness—these advance virtue. Refining one's words while establishing sincerity—this secures one's craft."
Interestingly, "cultivating one's craft" (xiu ye) is often understood by modern readers as "building a successful career" or "doing one's job well," but its ancient meaning runs deeper—"ye" refers to one's ground of standing in the world. Cultivating one's craft means honing whatever it is that allows you to stand firm in this world: your skill, your learning, your work.
Yet "advancing in virtue" and "cultivating one's craft" have never been two separate things. They are two sides of the same coin:
-
-
You walk the right path (Dao), do what is right (goodness); when these acts land in your professional domain, that is cultivating your craft.
-
You hone and accumulate day after day within your domain (accumulation); the stable character that grows out of this is advancing in virtue.
So if we translate "jin de xiu ye" literally, the soul is lost. A more accurate rendering might be:
"Becoming a better person by doing better work—and doing better work by becoming a better person."
Spontaneous Clarity: The End That Is Not an End
Returning to Xunzi's phrase, "spiritual clarity obtained of itself." When a person reaches deep into the process of "accumulating goodness into virtue," what happens?
It is not that he suddenly acquires some superpower. No halo appears above his head. Rather—his judgments become cleaner, his choices less labored, his perception of things sharper. This is what Xunzi means by "the sage mind is complete"—a complete mind falls naturally into place.**
Modern psychology might describe this with the term "expert intuition." A chess master knows at a glance what the next move should be—not because he calculates faster than others, but because through countless games he has accumulated enough "De" that judgment becomes a kind of bodily self-knowledge.
East and West converge once more. Michael Polanyi wrote:
"We know more than we can tell."
Personal Knowledge
This is the modern footnote to "spiritual clarity obtained of itself": the deepest clarity is an unspeakable self-knowing.
Conclusion: A Right Path Without End
Between these two sentences lies a complete map of a life:
-
1. Recognize the right path—The Dao is not any random road, but the right one, the open one, aligned with fundamental order.
2. Walk step by step—Goodness is not a one-time heroic act, but the right choice in every small matter.
3. Let accumulation happen—Virtue does not grow in a day; it is the callus earned by walking day after day.
4. Wait for clarity to come of itself—Spiritual clarity is not begged for; it is the light that naturally ignites within after you have walked far enough.
"Advancing in virtue, cultivating one's craft"—at the end of the day, these four characters are not a goal but a way of living. There is no graduation ceremony, no final certification. Every day you wake up, stand before that right path, and decide to take the next step—that is the whole secret.
The Dao is long. But every step counts.
