A disciple buys, a master sells, a grandmaster waits(会买是徒弟,会卖是师傅,会空仓是祖师爷)":
Livermore's Way: He Who Buys Is a Disciple, He Who Sells Is a Master, He Who Waits Is a Grandmaster

I. The Nature of the Market — There Is Nothing New in Wall Street
"There is nothing new in Wall Street. There can't be because speculation is as old as the hills. Whatever happens in the stock market today has happened before and will happen again."
Livermore teaches us: the market is not a random casino but a projection of collective human nature. Prices move along the Line of Least Resistance — upward in bull markets, downward in bear markets. The trader's first job is not to predict, but to recognize the trend and follow it.
"The market is never wrong. Opinions often are."
This echoes "he who buys is a disciple"— the novice is busy forming opinions and picking tops/bottoms; the proficient trader sets aside ego, accepts the market's authority, and acts only when the market itself signals.
II. He Who Buys Is a Disciple — The Pivotal Point & Test Position
"It is not the thinking that makes the big money. It is the waiting — and then buying at the right time."
Livermore emphasized: Buying is not about catching the absolute low, but about waiting for price to break a "Pivotal Point" — the upper boundary of a prolonged consolidation or key resistance — confirming the Line of Least Resistance is upward. The first position is always a small test position; only after the market proves you right do you add via pyramiding.
-
(Never average down a losing position)——亏损的头寸说明时机或判断错误,应止损而非补仓。
-
-
Never average down a losing position — a loss means your timing or judgment was wrong; cut, don't add.
-
Only pyramid into profits — let the market confirm you're right.
-
Before buying, ask: "Is this a bull or bear market? Does this stock lead its sector?"
This is the skill of the disciple— mastering tape reading, pivotal-point timing, and staged entry. Necessary, but not sufficient.
III. He Who Sells Is a Master — Cutting Losses, Running Profits & Knowing When to Exit
"Profits always take care of themselves — but losses never do."
Livermore paid for this rule with multiple bankruptcies: Cut small losses quickly; let big winners run. Define your stop-loss beforeentry (below key support / breakout failure level) and exit mechanically when hit — no debate, no hope. Conversely, once in profit, give the position "room to breathe"; don't panic-sell on minor reactions. Hold until clear trend-reversal signals appear.
-
Well, this is a bull market, you know."(牛市你就拿着,别乱卖)
-
Sell when price fails to make a new high and breaks the last minor support— not when you imagine a top.
-
Use a trailing stop — ratchet your stop up as the trend advances to protect profit.
-
Old Turkey's maxim: "Well, this is a bull market, you know."— In a bull market, sit tight; don't churn.
Selling tests your ability to overcome hope(not cutting losses) and fear(exiting winners too early). Those who master this are rare — hence, the master.
IV. He Who Waits Is a Grandmaster — Cash, Patience & the Art of Sitting Tight
"It never was my thinking that made the big money for me. It always was my sitting."
Livermore's deepest insight: Most of the time the market offers no tradable edge; ~80% of profits come from ~20% of price moves. The real craft is keeping your hands in your pockets, staying in cash, waiting for the pivotal point — then, once positioned correctly, sitting tightuntil the trend exhausts itself.
-
(Don't trade for the sake of trading)"
-
-
Don't trade in choppy, directionless markets — "never overtrade."
-
No pivotal point = best action is no action= the grandmaster's realm.
-
After entry, hold through normal reactions — this, too, is the art of sitting tight.
"Play the market only when all factors are in your favor. No person can play the market all the time and win."
Waiting requires conquering two instincts — FOMO (fear of missing out) and action bias (the itch to do something). Livermore said his costliest lessons taught him: Don't rush in. Prefer missing mediocre opportunities to forcing trades. Act only on high-conviction setups. This is precisely the grandmaster's level — he who knows when not to trade.
V. The Greatest Enemy Lies Within — Emotion, Independent Judgment & Discipline
"A speculator's chief enemies are always from his own interior — fear, greed, and hope."
Livermore repeatedly warned: Tips are traps. Never blindly follow experts. Think independently and verify against the tape. Admit error immediately — don't rationalize a losing position. When winning, beware of arrogance; trade the system, not your feelings. His catastrophic loss from heeding Percy Thomas's cotton advice — against his own read of the market — taught him never to let another man do his thinking.
-
-
Write down your trade plan beforeentry (reason, stop, target).
-
During the session, check only facts — never "how does it feel?"
-
Review regularly — Livermore kept notebooks logging every trade and his state of mind.
