The Power of Naming: How the Spring and Autumn Turned Words into Constitutional Law

《春秋》名分学：中国人如何用“写对名字”来约束权力

If pre-Han China had one supreme technology, it was not bronze, not chariots, and not even the calendar.

It was naming.

西汉以前，中国最厉害的技术不是青铜，不是战车，甚至不是历法。

而是命名。

The Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu) is a thin book — less than 18,000 characters — recording 242 years of Lu state history.

《春秋》很薄，不到一万八千字，记了鲁国242年的事。

But it terrified emperors for two thousand years.

因为孔子在书里做的事，比造反更可怕：

他把“怎么写一个人”变成了“这个人到底是谁”的终审判决。

一、Why names mattered more than swords

为什么“名字”比刀剑更重

In the Zhou world, 名 / ming（name）was not a label. It was a position in the cosmic order.

周人相信：名字不是贴纸，是你在天地秩序里的位置。

• A father who acts like a tyror is no longer a "father" in full.
  父亲如果像暴君，他就不再完整地是"父"。
• A minister who kills his lord is not "brave." He is 弑 / shi​ — a word that carries heaven's curse.
  臣杀君不是"勇敢"，是弑——一个带着天谴的词。
• A ruler who flees is not "traveling." He is 出奔 / chu ben​ — expelled by his own failure.
  国君跑了不是"巡游"，是出奔——被自己的失败赶走。

The Gongyang Commentary says it plainly:

《春秋》辨是非，故长于治人。

The Spring and Autumn distinguishes right from wrong; therefore it excels at governing people.

But more precisely:

《春秋》辨名分，故长于畏人。

The Spring and Autumn distinguishes name and rank; therefore it excels at making power tremble.

二、The mechanism: 一字之褒，荣于华衮；一字之贬，严于斧钺

机制：一个字的光荣胜过锦袍，一个字的贬斥严过砍头

This is not metaphor. It is the actual operating system.

案例一：郑伯克段于鄢

The Earl of Zheng defeated Duan at Yan.

看起来像一句军事简报。但《公羊传》拆开每一个字：

• 郑伯​ — why not "brother"? Because a true elder brother would not drive his sibling to rebellion. By calling him "Earl," Confucius strips him of fraternal dignity.
  "郑伯"为什么不写"兄"？因为真兄长不会把弟弟逼反。写"伯"，就是把"兄"这个身份从他身上剥掉。
• 克​ — why not "defeated"? "Ke" is used for equal powers, like two states at war. Duan was a subject-brother. Using "ke" frames him as a rival state — meaning the Zheng ruler had already treated his own brother as an enemy.
  "克"是两国相战的词。用"克"，等于说：郑伯早就把弟弟当敌国了。
• 段​ — why not "uncle" or "younger brother"? Because Duan acted without subordination; he forfeited the name.
  不写"弟"，因为段不守臣道，自己把"弟"这个字弄丢了。
• 于鄢​ — why name the place? To show how far the rot had spread — all the way to the border.
  写地名鄢，是让人看见：祸根烂到了边境。

六个字。每一个字都是一次审判。

案例二：赵盾弑其君

晋灵公无道，赵穿杀之。赵盾当时不在场。

孔子写：晋赵盾弑其君。

为什么？

董狐曰："子为正卿，亡不越境，反不讨贼，非子而谁？"

You were the chief minister. You fled but didn't leave the state. You returned but didn't punish the killer. Who else?

赵盾没有动手。但他有权力制止而没制止，所以名字上他就是一个弑君者。

这不是法律。这是比法律更深的"名分之法"：

你叫什么，取决于你本可以做什么却没有做。

三、名分 as constitutional restraint

"名分"如何成为一种宪法性约束

Western political thought built rights​ and separation of powers.

Pre-Han China built 名分 / ming-fen​ — the binding of power through correct naming.

西方政治思想造出了"权利"和"三权分立"。

西汉以前的中国造出了"名分"——用"写对名字"来绑住权力。

How it worked in practice:

The key insight:

你可以是天子，但如果你的行为像独夫，后世不会写"天子"，会写"出奔""失国""弑"。

You may sit on the throne, but if you act like a tyrant, history will not call you "Son of Heaven." It will call you fled, lost the state, was slain.

This is why Sima Qian said:

《春秋》者，礼义之大宗也。

The Spring and Autumn is the great ancestor of rites and righteousness.

And why Mencius said:

孔子成《春秋》，而乱臣贼子惧。

When Confucius completed the Spring and Autumn, rebellious ministers and villainous sons were terrified.

They were terrified not of an army.

They were terrified of the brush.

他们怕的不是军队。

他们怕的是一支笔。

四、Why this matters for the world today

为什么这对今天的世界有意义

1. Naming as the first act of justice

Before you can prosecute a war criminal, you must name​ what they did.

Before you can resist tyranny, you must refuse​ the names tyranny gives itself.

在起诉战犯之前，你必须先命名他做了什么。

在抵抗暴政之前，你必须先拒绝暴政给自己起的名字。

• "Enhanced interrogation" ≠ torture
  "强化审讯"≠酷刑
• "Collateral damage" ≠ murder of civilians
  "附带损伤"≠屠杀平民
• "Restructuring" ≠ firing thousands to enrich five people
  "重组"≠为肥五人而裁万人
• "Patriotic education" ≠ erasing memory
  "爱国教育"≠抹掉记忆

The Spring and Autumn tradition says: call things by their right names, or the world rots.

《春秋》传统说：名不正，则言不顺；言不顺，则事不成。

2. The media is the new Spring and Autumn

Today, naming is done not by historians but by headlines, algorithms, and feeds.

今天，"命名"不再由史官完成，而是由标题、算法、信息流完成。

• A coup is called "constitutional reform."
  政变被叫"宪政改革"。
• A genocide is called "counter-terrorism."
  种族灭绝被叫"反恐"。
• A corporate bailout is called "market stabilization."
  企业救赎被叫"市场稳定"。

The pre-Han mind would ask:

谁在写？谁在被写？写的那个人，敢不敢让自己的名字留在上面？

Who writes? Who is written? Does the writer dare leave their own name on it?

3. The individual as a Spring and Autumn of one

You name yourself every day.

你每天都在给自己"写《春秋》"：

• Do you call your laziness "self-care"?
  你把懒惰叫"自我关爱"吗？
• Do you call your cruelty "honesty"?
  你把刻薄叫"诚实"吗？
• Do you call your silence "professionalism"?
  你把沉默叫"职业素养"吗？

孔子说："吾日三省吾身。"

翻译过来就是：你每天给自己写《春秋》吗？写的时候敢不敢写真名？

五、The deepest cut: 正名 as the foundation of all order

最深的一刀：正名，是一切秩序的地基

Confucius in Analects 13.3, asked by Duke Jing of Qi:

必也正名乎！

One must rectify names!

名不正则言不顺，言不顺则事不成，事不成则礼乐不兴，礼乐不兴则刑罚不中，刑罚不中则民无所措手足。

If names are not correct, speech is not in order. If speech is not in order, affairs do not succeed. If affairs do not succeed, rites and music do not flourish. If rites and music do not flourish, punishments miss the mark. If punishments miss the mark, the people have nowhere to put hand or foot.

This is not pedantry. This is systems theory:

名字歪了 → 话就说不通 → 事就办不成 → 礼乐就废 → 刑罚就乱 → 人就不敢动弹

Wrong name → wrong speech → wrong action → rites collapse → law goes mad → people freeze

Everything starts with naming.

六、A world that has forgotten how to name

一个忘记怎么"命名"的世界

We live in an age of name inflation:

• Everyone is a "visionary."
  人人都是"远见者"。
• Every product is "revolutionary."
  每个产品都是"革命性的"。
• Every war is "humanitarian."
  每场战争都是"人道主义的"。
• Every lie is "alternative fact."
  每个谎言都是"另类事实"。

The Spring and Autumn says: when names become cheap, blood becomes cheap.

《春秋》说：名贱则血贱。

When you can call anything anything, you can justify anything. And when you can justify anything, someone will eventually justify killing.

当你能把任何东西叫成任何名字，你就能为任何事辩护。当你能为任何事辩护，终有一天会有人为杀人辩护。

七、The gift China can give the world

中国可以送给世界的礼物

Not the Great Wall. Not the Belt and Road. Not even tea or kung fu.

But this:

The belief that words are not noise. Words are the first form of power, and the first form of resistance.

不是长城，不是一带一路，甚至不是茶和功夫。

而是这个：

相信文字不是噪音。文字是权力的第一种形式，也是抵抗的第一种形式。

你写对一个人的名字，就是在给世界装一根骨头。

When you name a thing correctly, you put a bone back into the world.
