In the 14th year of the Jian’an era (209 CE), mist shrouded the vast Yangtze River. One ship, carrying the forty-eight-year-old General of the Left, Liu Bei, sailed from Gong’an toward Nanjun. Another, bearing the clan of Eastern Wu, moved upstream. When the two vessels met, Liu Bei came face-to-face with his third wife—the younger sister of Sun Quan.
这不是浪漫的邂逅,这是alliance by marriage,是乱世里最典型的政治交易。
This was no romantic encounter. It was an alliance by marriage—a quintessential political bargain in an age of chaos.
一、为什么是刘备?Why Liu Bei?
赤壁一战(208年),孙刘联军烧退曹操,但荆州七郡成了烫手山芋。周瑜夺下南郡,却无力独吞荆州;刘备需要一块稳固的根据地,以图“兴复汉室”。
After the Battle of Red Cliffs (208 CE), the Sun-Liu alliance repelled Cao Cao, but the seven commandries of Jing Province became a hot potato. Zhou Yu captured Nanjun but lacked the strength to hold all of Jingzhou alone. Liu Bei, meanwhile, needed a stable base to pursue his dream of “reviving the Han dynasty.”
于是,鲁肃提出了“借荆州”的方案,而孙权则用一桩婚姻来加固这份脆弱的盟约:
Thus, Lu Su proposed the famous plan to “lend Jingzhou,” and Sun Quan sealed this fragile pact with a marriage:
“进妹固好。”——《三国志·先主传》

民间戏曲里,她叫“孙尚香”,一身戎装,英气逼人。但在陈寿笔下,她是另一种形象:
In folk operas, she is known as “Sun Shangxiang”—clad in armor, fierce and valiant. But in Chen Shou’s historical account, she appears quite differently:
“才捷刚猛,有诸兄之风……侍婢百余人,皆亲执刀侍立。”——《三国志·法正传》
“She was quick-witted and formidable, bearing the temperament of her elder brothers… More than a hundred maidservants stood by her side, each holding a blade.”
这哪里是新婚燕尔,分明是一座military camp。刘备每次进入内宅,都心惊胆战——“惧生变于肘腋之下”(《华阳国志》)。
This was less a bridal chamber than a military camp. Every time Liu Bei entered the inner quarters, he was gripped by fear—“terrified of an uprising at his very elbow” (Huayang Guo Zhi).
法正曾劝刘备:“你怕什么?现在你是the Sun family’s son-in-law,谁敢动你?”话虽如此,刘备还是在公安城西另筑了一座“孱陵城”,让孙夫人居住——史称“孙夫人城”。Separation, not integration, was the real theme.
Fa Zheng once reassured Liu Bei: “What are you afraid of? You are now the Sun family’s son-in-law—who would dare touch you?” Still, Liu Bei built a separate city west of Gong’an, known as “Lady Sun’s City.” Separation, not integration, was the true theme here.

三、妹夫与舅哥的权力游戏
III. Brother-in-Law vs. Maternal Uncle: A Game of Power
作为brother-in-law,刘备对孙权客气三分;但作为割据一方的诸侯,两人矛盾重重。
As a brother-in-law, Liu Bei treated Sun Quan with due courtesy; but as rival warlords, their interests clashed constantly.
最著名的段子来自《三国志·先主传》注引《江表传》:
The most telling anecdote comes from the Jiangbiao Zhuan, cited in the annotations to Liu Bei’s biography:
孙权曾大张筵席招待刘备,酒酣耳热之际,刘备借着醉意说:“公瑾文武筹略,万人之英,顾其器量广大,恐不久为人臣耳。”——这是在敲打孙权:你手下周瑜太强,未必肯久居人下。
Sun Quan once hosted a grand banquet for Liu Bei. As wine flowed and spirits rose, Liu Bei remarked, tipsy: “Gongjin [Zhou Yu] possesses civil and martial talent, a hero among ten thousand. But his ambition is vast—I fear he will not long remain a subject.” This was a veiled warning: your chief commander may not stay loyal forever.
而孙权则在背后评价刘备:“Mediocre yet stubborn.”(《山阳公载记》)
In turn, Sun Quan privately judged Liu Bei as “mediocre yet stubborn” (Shanyang Gong Zaiji).
这对in-laws(姻亲),表面举杯,暗地磨刀。
These in-laws toasted each other in public while sharpening their blades in private.
四、破裂:当联盟输给野心
IV. Rupture: When Alliance Lost to Ambition
建安十六年(211年),刘备入蜀,留下诸葛亮、关羽镇守荆州,孙夫人也在此时被接回东吴。
In 211 CE, Liu Bei marched into Shu, leaving Zhuge Liang and Guan Yu to guard Jingzhou. Around this time, Lady Sun was escorted back to Eastern Wu.
临行前,她试图带走刘备唯一的儿子刘禅——这就是著名的“赵云截江夺阿斗”。虽然正史未载赵云具体行动,但《三国志·赵云传》明确记载:“权闻备西征,大遣舟船迎妹,而夫人内欲将后主还吴,云与张飞勒兵截江,乃得后主还。”
Before departing, she attempted to take Liu Bei’s only son, Liu Shan, with her—an event famously known as “Zhao Yun intercepts the river to rescue Ah Dou.” While the details are dramatized in folklore, the Records of the Three Kingdoms confirms: “When Sun Quan heard of Liu Bei’s western campaign, he sent ships to fetch his sister. She intended to bring the young lord back to Wu, but Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei blocked the river by force, thus recovering the young lord.”
这一事件,彻底撕破了孙刘联盟的温情面纱。从此,刘备不再是孙权的妹夫,而是the enemy across the river。
This incident ripped away the thin veil of warmth between the two sides. From then on, Liu Bei ceased to be Sun Quan’s brother-in-law and became the enemy across the river.
五、余波:夷陵之火,烧尽了姻亲之名
V. Aftermath: The Fire at Yiling Consumed Even the Name of Kinship
公元222年,夷陵之战爆发。陆逊火烧连营,刘备败走白帝城。此时,那位曾经嫁给他、又离开他的孙家公主,早已在历史中隐去身影。
In 222 CE, the Battle of Yiling erupted. Lu Xun’s fire attack devastated Liu Bei’s camps, forcing him to flee to Baidi City. By then, the Sun princess who had once married him and then left had already vanished from the historical record.
有一种说法称,孙夫人听闻刘备死讯后,投江自尽——这是后世文人的浪漫想象,而非史实。真实的情况是:political marriage ends where power struggle begins.
A later tale claims Lady Sun drowned herself upon hearing of Liu Bei’s death—a romantic invention of later scholars, not history. The reality is simpler: political marriage ends where power struggle begins.

Epilogue: The Irony of History
刘备与孙权的婚姻,始于“进妹固好”,终于“兵戎相见”。它告诉我们:在三国这个zero-sum game(零和博弈)的时代,kinship by marriage远不如power by arms来得可靠。
