光而不耀，静水流深
The Light That Does Not Dazzle, The Deep Water That Flows in Silence
道冲，而用之或不盈。
The Tao is empty, yet use will not drain it.
在东方美学的至高境界里，从不推崇满溢，而偏爱留白。老子在《道德经》第五十八章中写道：“是以圣人方而不割，廉而不刿，直而不肆，光而不耀。”这八个字，不仅是处世的哲学，更是纳音中“覆灯火”的灵魂写照。
In the highest realm of Eastern aesthetics, there is no worship of overflow, only a reverence for negative space. In Chapter 58 of the Tao Te Ching, Laozi writes: "Therefore the sage is square-edged but not cutting, angular but not stabbing, straight but not extreme, shining but not blinding (光而不耀)." These eight characters are not merely a philosophy of conduct; they are the very soul of the Fù Dēng Huǒ (Covered Lamp Fire) in the Na Yin system of Chinese metaphysics.
一、覆灯火：暗夜里的持守
I. The Covered Lamp: Holding Steadfast in the Dark
甲辰乙巳，纳音覆灯火。
Jia Chen and Yi Si, the Na Yin of the Covered Lamp Fire.
《三命通会》云：“照日月不照之处，明天地未明之时。”这盏灯，不是正午的骄阳，不是燎原的烈火，它是子夜时分，那一豆摇曳的灯火。它不争白昼的辉煌，只在幽暗处传明继晦。
The San Ming Tong Hui states: "It illuminates where the sun and moon do not reach; it brightens the hour before heaven and earth are lit." This lamp is not the blazing sun at high noon, nor the raging wildfire. It is the flickering flame at midnight. It does not compete for the glory of daylight; it merely transmits light and continues the dusk in the darkness.
光而不耀，是这盏灯的天性。真正的光芒，无需刺眼。如同甲辰之“偏库之火”，气蓄于内，含敏速峻烈之气，却敛而不发。它不似霓虹般喧嚣，只在书案一隅，安静地燃烧自己，照见文字，也照见人心。这便是“静”。
Shining but not blinding is the innate nature of this lamp. True radiance needs no glare. Like the "Fire in the Partial Treasury" of Jia Chen, its Qi is stored within, containing a sharp and swift intensity, yet it remains restrained. It is not as noisy as a neon sign; it burns quietly in the corner of a desk, illuminating the text and the human heart. This is "Silence."
二、水之深：乙巳与巽风的低语
II. The Depth of Water: The Whisper of Yi Si and the Xun Wind
老子又言：“上善若水，水善利万物而不争。”
Laozi also said: "The highest good is like water. Water is good at benefiting all things without contending."
乙巳覆灯火，居于巽宫（风位），含纯阳巽发之气。但风若不加以节制，便会吹灭灯火。故《五行要论》强调乙巳需“水济之则为纯粹”。水在这里，不是克火的敌人，而是养火的灯油。
Yi Si, the Covered Lamp Fire, resides in the Xun Palace (the position of Wind), containing the pure Yang energy of dispersion. But if the wind is not restrained, it will extinguish the lamp. Thus, the Wu Xing Yao Lun emphasizes that Yi Si requires "water to harmonize it into purity." Here, water is not the enemy that overcomes fire; it is the lamp oil that nourishes the flame.
这便是静水流深。
This is Deep Water Flowing in Silence.
水面平静，往往意味着水下渊深。一个真正有智慧的人，外表看起来如静水般波澜不惊，内心却如深海般包罗万象。乙巳之火，得水既济，方能光辉充实。这“充实”不是外放的张扬，而是内敛的饱满。正如那些在深夜里独自精进、不急于向世界证明自己的人，他们的力量，藏在最深的静默里。
A calm surface often implies unfathomable depths below. A truly wise person appears as calm as still water on the outside, yet their heart is as vast and deep as the ocean. The fire of Yi Si, harmonized by water, achieves a "full and substantial" radiance. This "substance" is not an external display of arrogance, but an internal fullness. It is like those who refine themselves in the solitude of the night, not in a hurry to prove themselves to the world; their strength is hidden in the deepest silence.
三、避风与藏锋：道家的生存美学
III. Sheltering from Wind and Sheathing the Edge: The Taoist Aesthetics of Survival
《渊海子平》在论覆灯火时，最忌“风吹灯灭”。
In discussing the Covered Lamp Fire, the Yuan Hai Zi Ping warns most severely against the "wind blowing out the lamp."
在命理玄学中，这盏灯怕风（忌霹雳火、忌再见辰巳）。映射到人生，这“风”便是浮躁的声名、无谓的争执、以及不合时宜的锋芒。道家讲“和光同尘”，就是要把自己的光芒收敛起来，混同于尘俗之中，不刺眼，不扎心。
In the metaphysics of fate calculation, this lamp fears the wind (it dislikes Thunder Fire and encountering Chen or Si again). Mapped onto life, this "wind" represents the浮躁 (fickle) pursuit of fame, meaningless disputes, and untimely displays of sharpness. Taoism speaks of "blending the light and merging with the dust" (he guang tong chen), which means restraining one's radiance to merge with the mundane, being neither dazzling to the eyes nor piercing to the heart.
光而不耀，是藏锋。
Shining but not blinding is the art of sheathing the edge.
古人云：“木秀于林，风必摧之。”覆灯火喜屋上土、壁上土，因为土能为其遮风。这便是“静水流深”的生存智慧：在动荡的时局或复杂的人际中，不争先，不露头，像深水一样沉潜。水深则流缓，人贵则语迟。只有浅薄的水流才会喧哗，只有贫瘠的土地才会寸草不生却尘土飞扬。
As the ancients said: "If a tree stands out in the forest, the wind will surely break it." The Covered Lamp Fire favors Earth on the Roof or Earth on the Wall, because earth can shield it from the wind. This is the survival wisdom of "Deep Water Flowing in Silence": In turbulent times or complex relationships, do not rush to the forefront or expose yourself; instead, sink deep like profound water. Where the water is deep, the current flows slowly; where a person is noble, their speech is measured. Only shallow streams make noise; only barren land is devoid of grass yet full of dust.
四、传明继晦：在黑暗中接续光明
IV. Transmitting Light through Dusk: Continuing Illumination in the Darkness
覆灯火又称“佛灯火”，是寺庙长明灯，也是科举考场灯。
The Covered Lamp Fire is also known as the "Buddha Lamp Fire"—the eternal flame in temples, and the lamp in the imperial examination halls.
它的存在，是为了“照日月不照之处”。这是一种伟大的孤独。在众人沉睡时，它醒着；在众人喧嚣时，它静着。这正如修行者的路，是一条少有人走的路。
Its existence is meant to "illuminate where the sun and moon do not reach." This is a form of magnificent solitude. While the masses sleep, it is awake; while the masses clamor, it is silent. This is akin to the path of a cultivator—a road less traveled.
静水流深，是因为它流向了更远的远方。
Deep Water Flows in Silence because it flows toward a more distant horizon.
甲辰乙巳之人，若得夜生，或逢井泉涧下之水，便是“暗灯添油”的贵格。这意味着，真正的滋养往往来自最不起眼的角落，来自那些无人问津的深夜苦读，来自那些无人喝彩的内心坚守。这种深，是时间的沉淀，是心性的磨砺。
Those born under Jia Chen or Yi Si during the night, or encountering Well or Runnel Water, possess the noble configuration of "Adding Oil to the Dark Lamp." This implies that true nourishment often comes from the most inconspicuous corners—from the lonely night studies when no one is watching, and from the inner perseverance when no one is applauding. This depth is the sedimentation of time and the tempering of character.
结语：做一盏灯，做一泓水
Epilogue: Be a Lamp, Be a Pool of Water
《道德经》有云：“大音希声，大象无形。”
The Tao Te Ching states: "The loudest sound seems silent; the greatest form appears formless."
愿你我修得光而不耀的品格，如覆灯火般，在属于自己的时区里，安静地燃烧，不夺日月之光，只暖方寸之心。

May you and I reach the realm of deep water flowing in silence. Like the abyss, let us exist calmly amidst the noisy world, not drifting with the tide, but guarding the ocean within our hearts.
光而不耀，是德；静水流深，是道。
To shine without blinding is Virtue; deep water flowing in silence is the Tao.
