From “Hurrah” to “His Majesty”: The Long Career of Wansui 从“乌拉”到“陛下”:万岁这个词的三千年旅行
1. Before the Emperor: Wansui as a Cry of Joy
皇帝出现之前:万岁只是“太好了”
Long before Qin Shi Huang invented the title Huangdi(皇帝), Chinese crowds already shouted 万岁.
在“皇帝”这个称号被秦始皇发明之前,中国人早就在喊“万岁”。
- 冯谖烧债券,薛地百姓称万岁 → 谢孟尝君免债
- 蔺相如完璧归秦,秦廷左右称万岁 → 拿到和氏璧的兴奋
- 田单守即墨,燕军误以为齐军降,呼万岁 → 战争中的欢呼
这里的 wansui means roughly:
“May this last ten thousand years!”
“愿此事长存!愿好运不散!乌拉!”
It is not a name. It is not a title. It is collective emotion with a number in it.
它不是名字,不是爵位,而是“带数字的热血”。
English has hurrah, Russian has ura, Roman crowds had io triumpie.
英语有 hurrah,俄语有 ура,罗马人喊 io triumpie。
Wansui belonged to the same family: the mathematics of hope.
2. Qin: The First Emperor and the First “Wansui” at Court
秦:始皇帝与朝堂上的第一声万岁
In 221 BCE, Ying Zheng called himself 始皇帝.
公元前221年,嬴政自号“始皇帝”。
From then on, the ruler was no longer just “king” (wang). He was the axis of heaven, earth and ritual.
从此,统治者不只是“王”,而是天地礼法的中轴。
Records say court officials shouted wansui before the First Emperor.
史书说百官在始皇临朝时呼万岁。
But we must be careful:
但要小心:
Qin made the emperor.
Qin did not yet monopolize the word.
秦创造了“皇帝”,却还没把“万岁”注册成皇家商标。
People could still cheer a general, a liberator, a local lord with wansui.
3. Han: When Wansui Meets Heaven
汉:万岁撞上了天
Liu Bang: the banquet version
刘邦:宴会版万岁
《史记》写未央宫成,群臣呼万岁、大笑为乐。
This is still banquet energy—“long live the house, long live the moment.”
Wu Di: the theological version
汉武帝:神学版万岁
Then comes the turning point.
真正的拐点来了。
元封元年,汉武帝登嵩山,下诏说:
御史乘属,在庙旁吏卒咸闻呼万岁者三。
The attendants heard the mountain cry wansui three times.
荀悦注:“万岁,山神称之也。”
The mountain god himself applauds the Son of Heaven.
Later he says:
登之罘,浮大海,山称万岁。
Mountains cried wansui over the sea.
This is brilliant propaganda.
这是顶级政治宣传:
- 不是臣子捧皇帝
- 是山、神、天、海都在捧皇帝
So wansui stops being a human cheer.
于是“万岁”不再是人的欢呼,而变成:
a signal from cosmology that the throne is licensed by Heaven.
宇宙发来的短信:此座得天许可。
From here, wansui and Huangdi start sharing the same aura.
从此,“万岁”和“皇帝”共用同一层光环。
The Eastern Han lock

东汉上锁
《后汉书·韩棱传》:
礼无人臣称万岁之制。
Ritual contains no rule allowing a minister to say wansui.
窦宪破匈奴,权倾朝野,有人想跪称万岁,韩棱当场驳回。
This sentence is the fingerprint of a new age:
这句话是新时代的指纹:
To say wansui to a minister is now flattery bordering on treason.
对权臣喊万岁,已经像谋逆的前奏。
4. Wu Zhou: Wansui Becomes Royal Branding
武周:万岁变成皇家品牌
Wu Zetian understood symbols better than most emperors.
She issued eras named:
- 天册万岁
- 万岁登封
- 万岁通天
“Ten-Thousand-Years-Registered-by-Heaven.”
“Ten-Thousand-Years-Ascending-to-Feng.”
“Ten-Thousand-Years-Penetrating-Heaven.”
A reign title is not a slogan. It is the calendar itself speaking.
年号不是口号,而是“时间本身在说话”。
When the year is called Wansui, the word can no longer belong to a farmer, a general, or a baby’s name.
当年号叫“万岁”,农民、将军、小孩的名字就都不能随便再用它了。
That is why Tang sources still show men named 史万岁、张万岁、谢万岁、刁万岁; after the High Tang, the name almost disappears.
所以唐前期还有人叫史万岁、张万岁;盛唐以后,人名“万岁”几乎绝迹。
5. Song: The Monopoly Becomes Law
宋:垄断写成律法
By the Song dynasty, the soft taboo becomes hard law.
《宋史·曹利用传》:
曹汭醉后衣黄衣,令人呼万岁 → 杖死。
A drunk nephew of a general plays emperor for a second.
He dies for it.
《寇准传》:
疯人于马前呼寇准“万岁” → 政敌弹劾 → 寇准贬青州。
From now on:
Wansui = the body of the emperor in sound form.
万岁 = 皇帝的声音化身。
If a voice cries wansui at you, that voice tries to make you emperor.
谁被呼万岁,谁就被声音加冕。
Song Confucians and Song security state both wanted the same thing:
宋儒与宋制殊途同归——
One throne.
One calendar.
One wansui.
6. The Theater Problem: “吾皇万岁万岁万万岁”
戏曲制造的错觉:吾皇万岁万岁万万岁
Modern costume dramas teach everyone:
臣见君 → 跪 → 吾皇万岁,万岁,万万岁。
Historians smile.
历史学者只会苦笑。
In real daily audiences, this was often not the routine.
真实日常奏对里,并不是每张嘴都这么背台词。
The triple cry—山呼、嵩呼、三呼万岁—belongs to grand state rites:
“三呼万岁”属于大朝礼:
- 登基
- 正旦
- 郊祀回銮
- 外国使节朝贡
- 皇帝出现在殿上如神像出场
Yuan drama and Ming opera froze one liturgical scream into everyday etiquette.
元明戏曲把“典礼里的尖叫”冻成了“日常礼节”。
So the phrase everyone knows is partly theatrical:
Not “what subjects always said,”
but “what the stage needed the people to believe they said.”
7. Why “Ten Thousand Years”?
为什么是“万”岁,不是“千”岁?
Chinese political theology loves numbers:
- 天有九野
- 地有九州
- 人有三纲
- 君有万寿
万 is not 10,000 in accounting.
“万”不是账本上的10000。
It means:
beyond counting, beyond decay, beyond succession.
数不完、朽不了、继不绝。
A king can die.
A dynasty can fall.
But the Mandate should not end.
So the emperor is called wansui not because he is immortal, but because the office pretends to be.
皇帝本人会死。
“皇帝”这个位置却想冒充不死。
That is the secret of the word:
A mortal man wearing an immortal title.
会腐烂的人,穿上了不腐烂的称号。
8. After the Empire: Wansui Without an Emperor
帝国之后:没有皇帝的万岁
1912 ends the empire.
1912年,帝制终。
But the word does not die.
It migrates:
- 青年万岁
- 人民万岁
- 科学万岁
- 和平万岁
Now wansui means:
“May this value outlive me.”
愿这个值比我活得久。
It has returned, partly, to its oldest self—
a cry, not a crown.
它部分回到了最古老的自己:
是欢呼,不是王冠。
9. One-Line Answer for Exams and Essays
考试/作文版一句话
“万岁”先秦为庆贺语;秦汉用于君;汉武帝借祥瑞使之神圣化;东汉禁臣下称万岁;武周以年号强化皇权;宋代始为皇帝法定专称。
Wansui was a crowd’s cheer, then a king’s blessing, then a Han emperor’s heavenly license, then a Song emperor’s monopoly, and finally a modern slogan for causes bigger than any throne.
10. Closing Image 结尾画面
Picture a Han mountain.
想象一座汉时的山。
Wind passes the pines.
Officials hear something like a voice:
万——岁——
万——岁——
万——岁——
Maybe it was the wind.
Maybe it was the priests.
Maybe it was the emperor’s own imagination.
But after that echo, Chinese history never heard the word the same way again.
但这声回响之后,中国历史再听“万岁”,已经不是原来的词了。
A word that began in the mouths of grateful peasants
ended on the lips of trembling ministers
and then, after the throne was gone,
rose again from students, workers, and poets
who had no emperor to praise
and so praised the future instead.
一个词,起于谢免债务的农民之口,
终于向龙椅发抖的臣子之口,
帝国退场后,又从学生、工人、诗人嘴里升起——
他们没有什么皇帝可捧,
于是开始为未来喊万岁。
Long live the word itself.
万岁,万岁,词万岁。
