In the Whirlpool of Emotion, Rational Judgment is Impossible
Introduction: The Out-of-Control Cockpit
The financial market is a massive amplifier of emotions. Here, greed and fear take turns on stage, while hope and despair shift in an instant. Countless traders spend their entire lives studying candlestick charts, indicators, and macro data, trying to find a map to the Holy Grail of wealth. Yet, they often overlook the most fatal enemy—the self sitting in the cockpit who takes off the oxygen mask during the storm.
When drastic price fluctuations trigger inner turmoil, you will find yourself trapped in an inescapable paradox: In the whirlpool of emotion, rational judgment is impossible.
Chapter 1: The Betrayal of the Brain
Modern neuroscience tells us that the human brain was not designed for trading. When facing losses, the amygdala—responsible for fear and survival—instantly takes over, while the prefrontal cortex, responsible for logic, planning, and rational decision-making, temporarily "powers down."
This explains why, when a stock you hold (like COFCO Technology we discussed) suddenly breaks below a key support level, you know you should stop-loss, yet your finger feels leaden and cannot press the sell button. Or why, when prices surge crazily, you know the valuation is absurd but impulsively chase the high due to the Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO).
At that moment, you are no longer a rational investor; you are a slave to your emotions. Every decision is essentially an instinctive reaction driven by panic or mania, rather than a calm calculation based on probability and expected value.
Chapter 2: Noise vs. Signal
Another danger of emotion is that it completely destroys your perception. In the whirlpool of emotion, you cannot see the facts; you only see what you want to see.
-
Confirmation Bias: When you are heavily long on a certain central enterprise military stock (like China Haifang), your eyes automatically filter out all negative news and focus only on ambiguous bullish signals to prove you are right.
-
Loss Aversion: The pain of losing is twice as psychologically powerful as the pleasure of gaining. Therefore, you would rather hold onto a deteriorating stock than admit a mistake and embrace new opportunities.
In this state, objective market signals (such as "volume breakout" or "low-volume pullback") are distorted by your subjective desires. You think you are analyzing the trend, but in reality, you are just finding excuses for your emotions.
Chapter 3: Reclaiming the Anchor of Reason
Since emotions cannot be eradicated, the art of trading lies in how to coexist with them and regain control at critical moments.
-
Mechanical Execution: Always make a plan before the market opens. Entry price, exit price, stop-loss level, and take-profit level must be written down in black and white. During trading hours, you are merely a non-emotional "button-pusher," executing the established procedure without any improvisation.
-
Cooling-off Period: When you feel your heart racing, palms sweating, or the urge to shout or smash the keyboard, stop looking at the screen immediately. Go get a glass of water or force yourself away from the monitor for 15 minutes. Cut off visual stimulation, let the amygdala calm down, and hand the steering wheel back to the prefrontal cortex.
-
De-leveraging: Leverage is fuel for emotion. Before learning to master your emotions, heavy positions and leverage can turn minor fluctuations into devastating disasters.
Just as we did with COFCO Technology: set "Real Turnover 2%" as the activation signal and "not breaking 4.25" as the stop-loss bottom line. Once the plan is set, what remains is waiting and accepting.
Conclusion: Becoming an Observer
Perhaps the highest realm of trading is not about defeating the market, but about defeating oneself.
Next time you stare at the screen and feel that rush of blood or that bone-chilling cold, tell yourself:
"Stop. I am in the whirlpool of emotion, and I cannot make a rational judgment right now."
Take a step back, breathe deeply. Let the storm pass. When the water calms down, you will naturally see the true reflection.
